Attention Is a Superpower | CNF

After fifty-plus years of living, I have developed one kind of super power and my wife calls it annoying super power. If something is missing I can find it immediately, I don't know but it happens automatically. Let be missing wallet, keys or toys anything that gets lost I will be the first one finding it. My wife often said, "Honey, you should start a missing-items investigation business, that would be very profitable for us." The lost item will eventually find me if it's inside our home, there is a higher chance of that.
I find it very surprising because I was always the opposite not like the way I'm now. As a teenager I was very careless. Often I misplaced things and forget about it within few minutes. But after getting myself involved into marriage then reaching fatherhood and by adding more responsibilities, I have learned to become more observant. I guess that's what happens when you become a parent. Even if I have never had a thought about it, still in the back of my mind I started to notice my surroundings. Not for me but for my family's well-being.
When I became a family man, I started to remember where my little one left her favorite toy. Where my elder daughter dropped her phone after coming home from school and where my wife put the keys while talking on the phone. I feel that I began those little observations and automatically stored it in my mind without making myself realize it.
One day, my super power was put to the test.
My daughter came from behind and hugged me. I already realized something was wrong. She was crying quietly trying to tell me something.
She said, "Daddy... I think I have lost the teddy bear you gave me last year!"
That teddy bear was her favorite stuffed toy because I gave it up her on her birthday. To her it was more than just a toy it was her best-friend, she took that teddy bear everywhere with her. From dinning to bed room there was no place left where she hadn't taken the teddy bear. She always slept with the teddy bear beside her.
Within minutes, the entire house was searching. My elder daughter and my wife was searching every room. I was looking all over the place where she could have gone but there was nothing. My daughters face was getting more pale by every minute.
She cried and asked "Did Mr.Bear left me forever?"
I couldn't bear to see her tears, I picked her up and assured her that I'll find him anyhow. Even though I said that but I wasn't completely sure I would find it. Two hours passed I sat quietly alone and tried to think about what exactly happened the previous day. Then I remembered seeing her carrying the teddy to the store room, which was unlocked yesterday because my wife was searching for an old file. Our daughter followed her mother into the room but when they came out there was no teddy in her hand and my wife locked that room again.
I took the keys from my wife and rushed to the store room without any further delays. There was a basket, right at the bottom I saw the teddy bear.
My daughter screamed with joy when I brought it back. Her joys knew no bounds she took the teddy and then she hugged me. She kissed me on the forehead and said, "You're the best daddy ever! you always knows where things are. I love you daddy!"
To be honest, I always don't know about it. It's just that I observe my surroundings and after taking responsibilities I've realized that paying attention is a rare skill. I have seen people around me they don't spend their time with family and always busy looking at their phones. I personally dislike those things, I feel family should be the first priority. So, even small acts can bring us closer and make our bond stronger. My super power isn't finding lost items it's paying attention to my loved ones. And that ability has helped me far beyond finding keys and toys.
I won't lie I got benefited from those skills because I can easily tell when my teenage daughter needs an advice even when she doesn't tell me about it. Also, it helps me notice when my wife is sick and doesn't admit it. It also helps me appreciate the small moments with my family. I feel that is the real super power. It not about finding missing things. The thing I desire the most in life is to pay enough attention to my family. And if I can keep doing that then it would be a super power worth having.
