The Courage to Begin Again

If I found myself in an unknown land with nothing in my pocket, then it would mean starting from Zero. To be honest my biggest challenge would be accepting the reality than finding money. I would feel devastated for losing my old life, because I have worked hard and struggled a lot in life, and now I have to restart from the beginning. Currently, I'm over fifty years old, I have lost my father at a young age and since then I have been struggling. After growing up when I got married to my wife and when my first daughter was born my life started to get better. After two daughters my responsibilities increased.

So, my routines were scheduled as my family required. So if all of that disappeared in a single day then at first I would spend the first week trying to figure out what had happened. Then I would try to survive, I can't sit still and except someone to do something for me. I have to watch people and learn how life works in that place. Rushing into things would probably create more problems than solutions.

If it was a young man instead of me then I think he would think of becoming rich quickly. But my goal would be different and simpler. I would focus on becoming useful. I have noticed that communities needs people who they can trust blindly. So, I like to start helping people wherever I could. I would try to help working in a restaurant, arrange their groceries, or help an elderly person to cross the road, or volunteer at a local educational institute. In the beginning I can't except any kind of payment because I need to build connections.

Many people think skills are only things like engineering, programming, or construction. But after fifty years of life, I think one of my greatest skills is understanding people. I know how to listen. I know how to stay calm during problems. I know how to keep my word. Those qualities may not bring instant money, but they help create opportunities.

I believe after building a good image I would become trustworthy within one or two months, someone would notice my efforts and offer me a small work. From there, I would be able to become part of the community. Then I think I'll be earning a good amount of money for my livelihood. After that I'll be able to socialize and make some friends. That would count as a success for me.

Even after all of these I would not stop missing my wife and daughters. With them my achievements would feel incomplete. Whenever I felt demotivated, I would remember their faces and continue moving forward.

So if I were stranded in a strange land then to become a functioning member of that land it would take few months or a year depending on the situation. I would survive there because life has taught me patience and the ability to start over when circumstances leave no other choice.
