The More We Receive The More We Want

When I was younger I have always wondered what it felt like to have it all, can having it all get us to a level of satisfaction? Can we ever get satisfied? I remember when I was living in my old apartment, it was very small, I was imagining living in a bigger house and how much I was going to cherish and value it. I started anticipating the day I will move to a bigger apartment, I thought that was all I needed in life to be satisfied. Few months later, I moved to the house, it was all exciting at first, I was excited, few months later, I became used to the apartment and wasn’t excited anymore. I went from wondering how I can pay my big apartment rent to feeling like it’s not a big apartment anymore.

I remember when I was using a low grade android phone, my thirst for iPhone became high. I wanted to use an iPhone so bad, I couldn’t stop using an iPhone until I got an iPhone 6S, after getting an iPhone, I stopped feeling excited about iPhone, but my iPhone 6S had an home button, iPhone X and the latest version didn’t have home button. Now I want that, I bought an iPhone X, I used it and stopped getting excited about it. No matter what new iPhone got released I didn’t care because they didn’t have anything different from my iPhone X. Then iPhone 14 was released and it came with something different, a Dynamic Island display, this is something new that most iPhones don’t have. But the Dynamic Island is for the iPhone 14 pro upwards, but I am not a fan of iPhone 14 Pro. iPhone 15 got released and all the versions of iPhone 15 got the Dynamic Island, so I got it. The first day it was exciting, but after that day, the excitement died. Now I want something different.

Same thing happens to every part of life, when you get your first car, you get excited, you are excited that you Can drive and you have your own car, but after years of driving it, you don’t get excited anymore, it’s becomes just a car, a means to get from one point to another, nothing special about it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like we are taking all these things for granted, it’s just our brains way of finding a new balance through change. If we get used to a certain thing, our brain becomes bored of the thing and starts looking for something new.

I guess the economic law of 'human needs being insatiable' really catches up with us. Nevertheless, we should always try to show some form of contentment, it's not being bored, it may serve as mental maturity.

The process of getting it is where most of the enjoyment lies, once we reach the event of getting it, it all goes away. I think wantings are a normal part of life, but we shouldn't let it control us.
