World Photography: Bridge To The Mainland

Round #20 of WORLDPHOTOGRAPHY CONTESTS

The theme this week

BRIDGES OF THE WORLD

This is a bridge I have crossed many times when leaving Prince Edward Island. These photos were taken from the shore on the New Brunswick side on December 24th when Hubby and I left the Island to visit my sister over Christmas.

This curved paved serpent connects the Island I live on to the mainland in New Brunswick.

The bridge opened May 31, 1997, the 12.9-kilometre (8.0 mi) bridge is Canada's longest bridge and the world's longest bridge over ice-covered water.
source

When the bridge opened it was named The Confederation Bridge but in Spring of 2022, the PEI legislature voted in favour of renaming the bridge to Epekwitk Crossing which is the traditional Mi'kmaq name for Prince Edward Island.

I have not heard if this is official yet as the name change needs to be approved by the Canadian federal government in order to take effect.

My only problem is, will I be able to pronoun properly the new name.

Wow that's a really long bridge! Awesome
photos of it ❤ @redheadpei!
I like how you called it a ''curved paved serpent''! :-)

Thank @shasta ❤️ . Experts believe a curved bridge reduces the potential for accidents. I think it’s good feng shui. 😊

That's a very long bridge. I guess it makes life easy for those on the island. Is it a toll bridge or do you have to pay to use it?

Yes, there’s a toll to leave the Island on the bridge but free to come on. It does make it easier and faster as the ferry was on a schedule. On the other side there is a ferry taking you to mainland Nova Scotia. There is a toll on it but it’s a great view sailing across the Northumberland Strait.

I wonder how the Mi'kmaq say "curved pavement serpent"? Nice photos. I love how the bridge disappears into the distance.

Once you hear it you will remember it, what a long span over icy cold water.

Must be a lovely drive on calm days, not so sure about high winds and stormy weather perhaps it picks up a little sway and swagger 😇, not so good.

Have a great day, thanks for sharing the grandeur in design and distance this takes to mainland.

Thanks Joan and for the Luv. It is a lovely drive across the bridge. It takes about 8 minutes if not too much traffic. The water below is too cold for a dip in winter. 😊

I haven’t known the bridge to sway but if there are serious high winds, high sided vehicles are asked to wait until calmer to access the bridge.

Have a wonderful day!

It looks like a fine bridge with curves to make for interesting drive, possibly great views in both directions on clear days.

High sided trucks have problems here with winds, good they are given warning not to cross on windy days.

Wishing you a fabulous weekend Jo.

Canada's longest bridge and the world's longest bridge over ice-covered water.

I always find it amusing how the authorities some how manage to find a way to get their structures in the world's XX'est 😄

Joking aside, it's a spectacular bridge!

When it was built it was the world’s longest bridge over sea water until another one surpassed the record in China . So now we had to find a new way to keep a world record. 😆

I know we have been talking about this bridge before, but once more I can only say "wow, what a huge bridge" 😃 It is pretty much as long as my hometown, but it looks much more interesting and better 😁

Good luck in the contest with this interesting and informative post, Jo 🤞
Wishing you a wonderful weekend 🌞

Good morning Hannes or rather Good Afternoon to you. 😊 The bridge makes going off island much easier although the 75 min. ferry ride on the other side is a pleasant adventure and the way tourists like to experience.

Thanks dear Hannes for everything. Always appreciated.

I hope you are not working too hard and enjoying the beautiful weather. 🤗 🌞The mountains are calling. 😊 ⛰

Good morning Jo,

it's late afternoon here and about lunchtime on PEI 😉

The ferry ride would be great, of course, because it's going slower and you don't need to take care of the traffic, but driving over such a long bridge must certainly be an adventure 😀

My weekend has already begun and our daughter has come for a visit, so the mountains have to wait - in Summer, they are all full of noisy tourists anyway, so I always try to find silent spots during these months 😉

After a rainy night it's warm again, but windy. I'm wishing you a wonderful weekend, dear Jo 🤗🌞

Beautiful bridge but I don't think I would be brave enough to cross it during stormy weather with tall waves and strong winds. From the photos it looks like there are no railings along the side but I know that's not the case. I have fear of heights. But great photos. Hope you win 🙏

Hi @gems.and.cookies! Not to fear as there is a secure cement railing on the bridge and you feel like you are driving on a highway. If you are in a truck or suv the view is awesome. In a car there are only certain points on the bridge where you get a good view of the water.

Thanks for lovely comment and good luck wishes. 💕

Wishing you a wonderful weekend, 🌞
