My shopping experience at a very rural marketplace.
This will probably be one of my most memorable shopping experiences. I can't remember if I have ever done shopping like this in a rural marketplace. The experience was so exotic, so authentic; not anything close to what we get in city shopping malls.
Let me share my experience with some photos.
A few days ago, I have been to my maternal grandparent's house which is in a very rural area in Bangladesh. While coming back after visiting, we thought why don't we bring back some fresh products from the village market. As the price is very cheap there and the products are organic. So we went to the village market.
This was the entrance where the little girl was selling chicken coops. The place is huge. Like every other market, they also have separate corners for different products. There were some fruit shops at the entrance too.
Then this vegetable corner started. There were seed shops, small plants/ready to plant on the farmland, and fresh vegetables were there. No need to say, we have brought a lot of fresh vegetables from the market. The price was 1/3 if I compare it to our city markets.
The colorful piece of cloth you are seeing is called 'Gamcha', which we use as a towel. It's handmade and 100% cotton. We brought a few prices.
Then we were looking for the chicken market where they usually sell live animals and birds like chickens, ducks, pigeons, cows, goats, and other animals.
But the place was outside the market, on the nearby school premises. We navigate the place with the help of the locals.
This is the place, you can see the crowd, it was so loud and energized. Everyone was side-eyeing us because they can see we are not the locals and probably were keeping an eye out for a good deal from us.
We have brought some ducks and chicken and brought back them home alive.
You have to be very good at negotiating and know the market price very well to get a good deal from the sellers. Not everyone but some of the sellers were trying to make a few extra bucks from us as we are from the city. I mean, I know they think it's logical as we may have money. But for us, we were there to buy fresh/organic products at a cheap rate than the city so we sure did some negotiation. We end up paying a little extra than the arugula market price. But that's okay as we got all the fresh products.
It was one of a kind experience for me. I was the one who was negotiating the price, checking the chicken and ducks for their quality which I never have done before in such a place.
It was fun and exciting. And we have got something to talk about with our family about the marketplace and the experience. That's what matters most.

Some similar market is also held here on Friday and Monday where two types of vegetables are available. A vegetable is the one which is brought from Mandi Parishad and which is kept green and fresh with the help of chemicals. The second vegetable is that which is grown here by the local farmers. Needless to say that the vegetables grown by the farmers are not so good to look at but they are very beneficial for health. However, only vegetables are sold in the market here and nothing else. My first priority is to buy vegetables from those people who are poor farmers and grow them with hard work. In the last 12 years, I have never bought vegetables from those people who pick up vegetables from Mandi Parishad. I always buy vegetables from those people who are poor farmers.
Really these photographs reminding me the real picture of rural areas where everything is natural and special..

That's a great thought. I usually try to do the same, buy from tje locals and small business owners. Tbey sell good products and give good deal.

Very colourful photos. Discussing the price, I guess, is part of the normal shopping process in such markets, it's like a small talk about the weather. But after shopping in supermarkets it's difficult and unaccustomed:)
Yes, I love negotiation ; it helps to get a good deal and some small talk as well. Miss thos in the city markets.

That is exotic and exciting for me! I know what you mean. How cool that you got to go there and negotiate your prices! I have to say that these pictures are wonderful and you captured the market just as I would see it, nothing like I have here and quite amazing the way things are displayed, especially the chickens and ducks!

When traveling, I cannot hide my nationality, so I am used to paying a little more, but, I really don't mind either. It is still much cheaper. The shot of the whole market, with people wandering all about and the one with the chickens there further down with the cages to the side.

I find it interesting to compare, not by the world's standards, but, by how we find the quality of our life with different indicators than the world does. It is not always about the wealth in money, sometimes money means very little when there is no value behind it. You cannot buy health although you can take care of what you have. Being educated isn't always about schooling, but acquiring knowledge and using it for the better good and happiness of the society you are living in. It is with great pleasure that I read through this and all of the posts, with these thoughts in mind.

Amazing shopping experience. I can relate with village markets. They have all the best green and fresh farm products. Happy you got some, because back in the city, they are costly and may not be organic.
Never seen such a colorful duck before. The one in our place is always black and white color combination. How much is the hive value of one duck here?

That is a great question, I never thought about.
I bought 2 pairs of duck and it costs me $8 each pair. It will cost me more than $10 if I get it from city market. That is quite cheap, I believe.
