Are you wondering what is Pitha?

It's a common dessert that is typically made of rice or wheat flour and mostly sweet. A popular dessert around here in my country Bangladesh.

There are thousands of Pithas in our cuisine. But the recipe I'm gonna share with you is very simple. I'm a lazy cook, you know!

Let's see what ingredients we need.

  • Two cups of wheat flour
  • One cup of sugar or as per your taste. Half for the Pitha and another half for the syrup
  • One cup of milk
  • Half a cup of coconut flecks
  • Cardamon, cinnamon, cloves (one piece each)
  • Butter oil to mix the dough (one spoon would be enough)
  • A pinch of salt
  • Vegetable oil to fry the Pithas

Now, let's see the step-by-step process.

  • Put the flour, coconut flecks, half a cup of sugar, and milk altogether in a pot and cook them for 5 minutes on low heat. Add a pinch of salt with it. No need to mix them in this stage.
  • After cooking for five minutes, mix them well and make dough on the pan. Let it cook for another five minutes.

In the meantime, you can prepare your sugar syrup.

  • Take half a cup of sugar or as per your taste, add water proportionately, add the spices and cook them. I like to make the syrup runny, which gives the best fluffiness to the Pithas.

Now take some butter oil in your hand so your hands don't get sticky when you roll the dough. Make small balls, press them with your palms.

They are ready to fry.

  • Fry them for one minute on both sides, in this way they will be fluffy and soft.

  • Add the Pithas to the cold sugar syrup.

If your syrup is hot the Pithas must be cold and vice versa. Otherwise, the Pithas would not be able to absorb the syrup. So keep this in mind.

Let the pithas absorb all the syrup and become soft. It will take up to 30 minutes and then they would be ready to eat.

Serving time!

Doesn't they look yum?

The coconut crunch, sweet taste, and softness of the flour; everything seems perfect on a cold afternoon. Give it a try. Even if you are not a huge fan of desserts you would probably love this Pithas.
