The Old Square
It is bounded by Teniente Rey, Muralla, San Ignacio and Mercaderes streets. It is the perfect place to enjoy the colonial architecture. It was founded in 1559, but the decision to officially establish it as a Square was made by the Cabildo in 1587. It became a site for theatrical performances, carnivals, religious processions, civic celebrations, etc. Later, it served as an open-air trading centre where wooden stalls were set up and named Reina Cristina. It is curious to know that the first fishmongers were based here. Throughout its history it has received different names such as: Nueva, Real, Mayor, De Roque Gil, del Mercado, de la Verdura, de La Constitución, Parque Juan Bruno Zayas among others.

The Square is surrounded by luxurious constructions that highlight its tourist attraction such as: the Palace of the Counts of Jaruco, the Gómez Vila building, the Old Romagosa building, among others.

Palace of the Counts of Jaruco
In its place there was a house of mortar and tile roof, but in the year 1732, Don Gabriel, first Count of San Juan de Jaruco demolished this house and in its place this mansion was erected. Until 1870 it belonged to the Counts of Jaruco, later it had several owners, which led to the deterioration of the building due to the frequent change of owners and its careless use. It was abandoned for a long period of time until it was restored in the early 80's and the Cuban Fund of Cultural Heritage was established here. This building is characterised by a transition of architectural styles, between Baroque and Spanish Mudejar, which interact in perfect harmony.

Gomez Vila Building (The Dark Chamber)
A mí en particular, me impresionó mucho este edificio por su hermoso diseño ecléctico de inicios del siglo XX. Constituye la edificación más alta de la Plaza y en su última planta se ubica la Cámara Oscura, que no es más que un moderno periscopio desde el cual el visitante puede obtener una vista panorámica de la Habana Vieja. En sus inicios este inmueble albergaba oficinas para la Dirección Nacional de Comunicaciones durante la época de la República y posteriormente, fue rentado por el Banco Internacional de Cuba.

Old Romagosa Building
This building borders the Plaza Vieja to the north and is characterised by its outstanding eclectic style from the beginning of the 20th century. It was initially occupied by offices and later, in the middle of the last century, it was used as a school until the present day.

The Planetary
On one side of the square we find a building where the Planetarium is located. This is a place where we can learn about the wonders of the cosmos and its evolution.

Old Square Fountain
In the very centre of the square is a beautiful fountain sculpted in marble by the artist Giorgio Massari. It is made up of an octagonal bowl at its base erected on two steps and in the centre of which rises a rectangular prism supporting a fluted column crowned by a goblet. The water flows from four shells located on the four sides of the prism. It is a pleasant place that gives a feeling of calmness and freshness.

Tulipan Sculpture
A whimsical sculpture of a giant tulip stands out on one of the square's corners. It was created by the outstanding Pinar del Río sculptor Juan Quintanilla and donated to Havana just as it was celebrating its 492nd anniversary. It is about 10 m high and materials such as stainless steel and marble were used.

Santo Domingo Square

After visiting the Plaza Vieja, I went into one of the busiest streets of the historic centre, Calle Mercaderes, and stopped at the Square Santo Domingo, an emblematic site with detailed sculptures alluding to important literary figures, next to one of the most prestigious universities in Cuba, the San Geronimo University College.

Because of its importance, I will begin with a brief review of the San Geronimo University College, which was the third university founded in the Caribbean region and the second of pontifical origin. In 1842 it became the Royal University of Havana. After suffering several setbacks, it was rebuilt thanks to a rehabilitation project.

Throughout the square there are four bronze statues representing famous personalities of world literature such as: Dante Alighieri, Miguel de Cervantes y Saavedra, William Shakespeare and Luis Vaz de Camoes.

Directly in front of the frontage of the San Gerónimo College is a fountain represented by a round pedestal that supports a sphere from which water flows calmly.

La Plaza Vieja

Fue fundada en el año 1559, pero la determinación de constituirla oficialmente como Plaza estuvo a cargo del Cabildo en el año 1587. Se convirtió en un sitio para representaciones teatrales, carnavales, procesiones religiosas, celebraciones cívicas etc. Posteriormente, sirvió como centro de comercio al aire libre donde se establecieron puestos de madera que recibieron el nombre de Reina Cristina. Hasta el año 1870 perteneció a los Condes de Jaruco, posteriormente tuvo varios propietarios lo cual, condujo a que la edificación se fuera deteriorando por el frecuente cambio de dueño y su uso descuidado quedando abandonada durante un largo lapso de tiempo hasta que a inicios de la década de los 80 fue restaurada y se estableció aquí el Fondo Cubano de Bienes Culturales. Este inmueble se caracteriza por una transición de estilos arquitectónicos, entre el barroco y el mudéjar español los cuales, interactúan en perfecta armonía.

Este edificio limita por el norte a la Plaza Vieja y se caracteriza por su destacado estilo ecléctico de inicios del siglo XX. Inicialmente estaba ocupado por oficinas y posteriormente a mediados del pasado siglo pasó a funcionar como una escuela hasta la actualidad.

Planetario de La Habana
A un costado de la plaza nos encontramos con un inmueble donde se encuentra el Planetario. Sitio donde podemos conocer acerca de las maravillas del cosmos y su evolución.

Fuente de la Plaza Vieja
En el mismo centro de la Plaza no encontramos con una bella fuente esculpida en mármol por el artista Giorgio Massari. Está conformada por una taza octogonal en su base erigida sobre dos escalones y en cuyo centro se alza un prisma rectangular que soporta una columna estriada coronada por una copa. El agua fluye a partir de cuatro conchas ubicadas en las cuatro caras del prisma. Constituye un sitio agradable que da sensación de apacibilidad y frescura.

Escultura Tulipán
En una de las equinas de la Plaza salta a la vista una caprichosa escultura de un tulipán gigante. Fue creada por el destacado escultor pinareño Juan Quintanilla y donada a La Habana justo cuando cumplía su aniversario 492. Tiene unos 10 m de altura y se utilizaron materiales como: acero inoxidable y mármol.

Plazoleta Santo Domingo
Después de visitar la Plaza Vieja me adentré en una de las calles más concurridas del casco histórico, la calle Mercaderes y me detuve en la Plazoleta Santo Domingo, sitio emblemático conformado por detalladas esculturas que aluden importantes figuras de la literatura junto a una de las más prestigiosas universidades de Cuba, el Colegio Universitario de San Gerónimo.

Por su importancia comenzaré con una breve reseña del Colegio Universitario de San Gerónimo la cual, fue la tercera universidad fundada en la región caribeña y la segunda de origen pontificio. En el año 1842 se convirtió en la Real Universidad de La Habana. Luego de sufrir varios avatares fue reconstruida gracias a un proyecto de rehabilitación.

A lo largo de la plazoleta nos encontramos con cuatro estatuas de bronces que representan a reconocidas personalidades literarias tales como: Dante Alighieri, Miguel de Cervantes y Saavedra, William Shakespeare y Luis Vaz de Camoes.

Justo en enfrente de la fachada del Colegio San Gerónimo se encuentra una fuente representada por un pedestal redondo que soporta una esfera a partir de la cual fluye el agua tranquilamente.
