Could Gold Tip the Global Balance of Power?
After years of only mild interest, gold has made a massive comeback in recent years, it's quite the change!
For the first time in decades, the total value of gold above ground has actually slipped past the value of all US Treasuries.
This is quite symbolic: US Treasuries were the gold standard of safety for decades. If you wanted security, you bought dollars and Treasury bonds. Gold was more of a 10% of yer vest traditional hedge.
Back in the 1990s, central banks couldn’t dump their gold fast enough. Britain even sold a big chunk of its reserves at the worst possible moment, something which people still talk about. Fast forward to today, and things have flipped. Central banks are buying gold instead of selling.
Why is Gold Attractive Again?
Maybe because nobody controls it...? Governments can freeze bank accounts, slap on sanctions, even block international payment systems. But if you’ve got gold sitting in your vault, nobody can touch it unless you hand it over.
When the West froze Russia’s foreign reserves after the Ukraine invasion, this made it painfully clear that, if push comes to shove, your money isn’t really yours if it’s parked in someone else’s financial system. If you want true independence, you need assets that can’t be frozen with the stroke of a pen. Possibly this is why so many central banks are now scrambling to beef up their gold reserves.
Slow Fade for the Dollar?
The US dollar’s share of global forex reserves has dropped since around 2000. Granted the US share is still huge, most trade still runs through dollars, and US financial markets are in a league of their own. But the trend is clear. Across Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa, governments are trying to untangle themselves from the dollar. Gold fits perfectly with that goal.
History Repeating...?
After World War II, gold sat at the heart of the global system. The US dollar was literally backed by gold. Then the ‘70s came along, the rules changed, and gold lost its official status. Even then, it never really disappeared from the picture.
Of course, no serious economist thinks we’re about to return to the strict old gold standard. The world is way too complex for that now, but it does appear that Gold is now more important again!
Gold isn’t going to replace the dollar outright. But it’s carving out a more significant role as insurance against a future where no single country, not even America, can write all the financial rules.
