Domestic energy prices to rise again!

avatar

OFGEM will be increasing the energy price cap in January 2024, taking it from £1,834 to £1,928 per year.

Screenshot 2023-12-05 at 13.49.35.png

This means an extra £100 per household per year for energy, as it's unlikely that gas and electricity prices are coming down any time soon given the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza.

The sad thing is all of this was entirely likely, if not predictable, and frankly the DOUBLING of energy prices in the space of just a few months in 2022 should have prompted much more urgent action on the part of the UK government to build more energy infrastructure at home.

Note that prices aren't coming down anywhere near as quickly as they went up!.

Ambitious plans, or just hot-air...?

Of course the Tories have laid out ambitious plans to develop a diversified energy production base, including nuclear, wind, solar, heat pumps and more oil.

But a plan is just a plan, and there seems to be very little being done on the ground as far as I can see that's going to meet the 2030 targets outlined in said plan!

But ATM energy production is trending the other way!

Energy production from EVERY source in the UK DECLINED in Q2 2023 to 2023, not enough to explain the massive spike in prices (that was due to global factors), but certainly not helping matters either...

Screenshot 2023-12-05 at 13.54.14.png
(For reference, we consume around 35M tonnes of oil equivalent in the UK per quarter on average.)

What really amazes me is how LITTLE either the Tories or Labour is doing about any of this.... I mean our nuclear programme is going nowhere, fracking is out the question (GOOD!) and there are restrictive planning restrictions on the development of more wind farms.

And there seems to be naff all investment in the easiest way to save money on energy - schemes to insulate older houses!

Things are NOT looking good for the future of domestic energy production and usage in the UK!

Does the UK import any electricity from French nuclear plants?

We mainly import gas from Norway, Russia, Belgium and the Netherlands which is converted to electricity here. In the southeast of England there is consultation about building two huge (100 foot high) electricity converters, one either side of the Thames estuary in Kent and Suffolk, connected to each other to harvest off-shore energy and transport it around the country Article with pictures.

The Tories have spent the last 13+ years dismantling and destroying UK gas and oil storage facilities and removed incentives for wind and solar options under Cameron's tenure.

They are not interested in fixing up the housing stock to make it more energy efficient. It's not conservative policy, it cuts into energy companies profits which are at all time highs.

A new nuclear plant in maybe 10 years time?
Not to mention when it goes wrong and creates another wasteland. Remember Windscale?

Follow the oil money and see who is getting kickbacks. Start with Blair!
There is cross party corruption and it's endemic. Everyone knows this but remember a significant number of the British electorate in fact support the Tories.

We have a lot of wannabe capitalists who like the idea that one day they too can exploit the myopic people of this country.

We the people get to pay for this clusterfuck of an administration.

Don't they always? 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️😂👍🏼
Tories in power is always a disaster. Conservatives are not the problem.

It's tiny Tory factions like the ERG that seems to always rule the conservative party and the conservative party must take responsibility for their lack of control of these rabid factions.

The Tories spend all their time fighting each other whilst trying to help out their mates. They are a disgrace. Mind you, Labour are a bit of a mess and I know people who have little faith in Starmer. What a mess.

It's always been the same. Both parties are a disgrace. It's impossible to tell them apart?

It's Orwellian. Red or Blue...choose!

They're the same party.

I would disagree about them being the same. That is the idea pushed by certain people who want to disrupt the system. This can lead to far right parties gaining power as has happened elsewhere.

Each party has their own issues. The Tory right wing has a big influence that is scary. Labour seem to be more about trying to appear 'safe' and appeal to the Brexit voters. I think they need to say more about undoing the damage the Tories have done.

There tend not to be simple answers to difficult problems, but that is hard to get over in a tweet. The level of political discourse has deteriorated.

I would argue that both are conservative parties albeit labour with a smaller C.
Labour has been clearing out anyone who may be seen as traditional labour people like Corbyn etc.
I agree that they are trying to appear safe and appeal to the centre voters which includes the vast majority that voted for Brexit by swallowing the lies they were fed.
But this approach has led to labour appearing to have lost the plot on who they are supposed to represent.
Labour was born from the unions and cooperative societies of this country and in forgetting their roots they have lost their way in my opinion.

The level of political discourse has deteriorated.

I agree. It's all about soundbites and 3 word slogans that the proles can repeat meme like.🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️😂👍🏼

So true! It's vested interests bringing us all down - it's an argument for smaller scale solutions for sure!

Things aren't really looking that good for any kind of infrastructure, hard or soft.

The difficulties faced by wind farm development is nuts!!. The availability of investment capital for these projects is high, because, guess what ?, they turn a profit and yield a return. They work.

That in itself should get the process rolling, but alas they tend to offend people no matter where they go. Personally, I'm more offended by my high utility bills than buy a windmill

I got emails from my energy companies saying this. I could almost hear them laughing at me while composing the email.

I guess at least it's a more manageable price increase this time around, that's something!

The lack of investment in improving the housing stock is a disgrace. It seems a good way to move towards 'net zero'. They bang on about helping 'hard working families', but reducing the running costs of homes would have a big impact.

We'll be helping out soon as our solar gets installed next week.

This gives an insight into where our energy comes from. Wind is a major part of it and could be bigger.
