How to Tackle the Epidemic of AI Cheating

Roberto Serrano has taught his advanced economics course at Brown for the best part of two decades and had never once offered a take-home exam. He made the switch this year for entirely reasonable reasons — several students said they felt anxious sitting exams in a room after a shooting on campus in December killed two of his students. So: kind gesture, reasonable accommodation, nothing sinister.

Then the marks came back. Out of 86 students, 40 scored a perfect 100, and the class average score was 96 — against a historical range of 65 to 80. On top of this several students had submitted an identical, oddly roundabout route to the same answer, instead of the more obvious method the question called for. When a teaching assistant ran the question through ChatGPT, it produced the exact same convoluted logic.

The trap he set, and the class's response

Rather than accuse anyone outright, Serrano gave the class an out: if the in-person final produced a similar distribution to the midterm, he'd let the midterm stand. If not, he'd void it. It's a nice bit of applied game theory from an actual game theorist — he essentially made honesty the dominant strategy and let the students reveal their own type.

They revealed it. Eighteen students dropped the course outright, nine stayed enrolled but simply didn't turn up for the final, and of those who did sit it, the average collapsed to 48.6%, a historic low, with three students scoring zero. The overlap between "scored 100 on the take-home" and "vanished before the in-person paper" wasn't subtle. Whatever those students had learned over the semester, it clearly wasn't sitting inside their own heads.

Institutions moving at the speed of PR

What I find almost more interesting than the cheating itself is Serrano's account of the university's response, which he's called "meek" — the story only really got institutional attention once it went viral via a Spanish-language outlet rather than through Brown's own channels. That's a very familiar shape: reputational risk management dressed up as due process, moving at the speed of PR rather than the speed of the problem.

Final thoughts

I don't think the moral here is really about cheating, or even about AI specifically — it's about what happens when you remove supervision from any incentive structure people didn't fully buy into in the first place. Give people an unmonitored shortcut and a low personal cost for taking it, and a chunk of them will take it, degree-mill or not. Universities have spent decades selling the credential as a proxy for the learning; AI is just the first tool efficient enough to fully sever that link at scale, and cheap enough that almost anyone can use it.
