Is the Triple Lock Bankrupting Britain?
The Triple Lock is enormously expensive, yet politicians just aren't up to tackling it...
This is unsurprising given that pensioners are more likely to vote, so touching the treble lock is political suicide.
But as the population ages, can Britain really afford to keep jacking up the state pension year after year?
What is the Treble Lock...?
Simple version: the triple lock says the state pension goes up by whatever’s highest—inflation, average wage growth, or 2.5%.
This may have made sense in 2010 when it was introduced as pensions had lagged behind other price indicators, but in more recent years the pension has gotten pricey and fast. Since you always take the highest number, those bumps start stacking up. Each year, the base gets bigger, and it adds up quicker than most people realise
An Aging Britain
But the triple lock on its own isn’t the main problem, there's also the matter of who’s left to pay for it.
Britain’s getting older. People live longer; not many babies are being born. More retirees, fewer workers to bankroll the system. Classic demographic squeeze, and it’s not just a UK thing; rich countries everywhere are dealing with it.
When the triple lock kicked in, the number of workers per pensioner looked a lot healthier. Fast-forward a few decades, and that ratio shrinks. Fewer people paying in, more people taking out.
The Political Hot Potato
No one wants to tackle the treble lock.
Every idea there is to fix it means a political backlash. So, politicians stick their heads in the sand. The triple lock turns into one of those sacred cows: talk about reform in private, but keep it off the campaign trail. Can you blame them? Older Brits vote in droves, while younger Brits who pick up the tab, ultimately, are much less likely to vote.
Not so simple...?
Compared to other countries, the UK’s pension isn’t exactly generous. A lot of retirees depend on the state pension alone to survive. They've worked, paid taxes all their lives and maybe they deserve a secure retirement? Especially after a decade-plus of flatlining wages, high rents, and constant public service cuts?
Final Thoughts
The Pensions Treble Lock is a real mess. While it has lifted a lot of pensioners out of hardship, it has also stuck future taxpayers with a bigger bill, and economic growth isn’t exactly booming.
Sooner or later, the numbers catch up with every pension system. Nobody wants to axe the triple lock right now; facing the music probably costs votes.
But eventually, someone in Westminster has to ask: how much of Britain’s income should go to retirees when there are fewer workers left to fund it?
That’s a fight politicians can only dodge for so long.

The triple lock is really but a drop in the ocean, compared to the ridiculous amount given to the sick lame and lazy club, the majority of whom could work, but there again most jobs especially low paid are filled with immigrants, add to that the fact that the lazy fuckers can get more vampire money off the state than actually breaking into a sweat. No incentive, the taxpayer funds their fags, booze and scratchcards.
Don't get me started on PIP!!
