Pity the Poor Splinterlands SlumLords, or a few thoughts on the PP variability of returns for Castle owners...

There’s been some talk in the Mav’s Discord about the max Production Points stake that it’s worth putting on a Castle or Keep plot.

I’m looking at this from the perspective of a castle owner, and what’s below is calculated for grain only as SPS is from a limited pool and so very much and unknown!

TDLR - it VERY MUCH depends on how much production power is staked to your region!

To take two very different scenarios…

  • IF the average PP staked to 990 plots in your region is 25K then it’s worth staking 100K PP to yer castle to bring the tax rate up to 18%
  • IF the average PP staked to 990 plots in your region is just 2.5K then it’s only worth staking <20K PP to your plot, it’s not worth taking it up to 15%.

This is based on what the additional staking requirements in PP terms to get you increasingly smaller tax returns would earn you in grain just by staking them to a plot.

Decreasing returns per increasing PP.

The above is based on this table

castle2.PNG

You can see that roughly you need the following stake to get to the corresponding taxes. (The max tax is 20%, and that’s of 2% of all the taxes).

  • 20k = 0.12
  • 35K = 0.15
  • 50K = 0.165
  • 60K = 0.17
  • 100K = 0.18.

So as you go up it becomes INSANELY expensive to add to that percentage.

You get 12% for the first 20K PP (actually if anything it’s less than a 20K PP stake for this, I’m being approximate.

Then it costs you another 15K PP to go up to 15%, and once you’re at 17% with 60K PP, you’re looking at 40K PP a pop per percentage.

However, it’s still worth that final push to 100K IF you’ve got insane PP staked in EVERY plot in your region:

  • With 25K PP staked on 990 plots you’d be collecting approx 23K grain in tax per day percentage point, compared to 19K net grain with 40K staked to just grain production, hence it’s worth spunking 40K PP on that extra percent to get you up to 18%
  • HOWEVER, with only 2.5K PP on 990 plots, you’d only be collecting and additional 7100 if you went from 12% with 20K up to 15% with 35K, whereas that additional 15K PP would earn you 7200 just on pure grain production.

As always with SL it’s a rich man’s game….

Let’s be realistic, almost no one is going to be in a region where the AVERAGE PP stake per plot is 25K PP, that’s around 4 max gold chaos rares and one maxed gold chaos epic, to put
it in perspective, or two maxed gold chaos legendaries plus the rest maxed gold chaos commons, or thereabouts. ON EVERY SINGLE ONE OF 990 PLOTS.

So unless you’ve got 2000 maxed gold chaos legendaries for yer region, forget it!

The typical region holder is going to be looking at the lesser scenario above, personally I’d be amazed if my average PP stake was over 5K per plot. I mean GOB SMACKED, KNOCK ME OVER AMAZED if I managed that!

However, there are those LEGENDARY TOTEM FRAGMENTS….

PP to yer castle does have ONE other attractive feature… 3 times the chance of finding legendary totem fragments.

So personally I’m aiming for a 40K PP staked, while it’s suboptimal in terms of tax returns, I’m up for those legendary totem fragments, I mean a whole one DOUBLES your production and the current market rate is $2000, which is bonkers.

But worth a punt with PP, that’s for sure!!!

A lot of people will be very disappointed with their returns from both keeps and castles. Unless you are in a perfect tract/region, there are going to be a lot of plots that simply will do nothing for the forseeable future.

I have plots all around Praetoria but I'll only ever work the plots in my own region, the rest will remain idle until I can either rent them out or sell them... both might take years to manifest.

At least we're saving 2% of our own production! And treble the chance of rare totem fragmnents... it's a reasonable start.

I'm certainly not expecting outsanding results!

And those collection costs... damn!

I for one didn't think very deeply about the staked DEC needed for land ( mostly because I only intended to buy two plots initially and put Runi on them, so, who cares about DEC staking, right ?) I filled my boots with max lvl GF Chaos commons, thinking, yup ! , affordable and a nice chink of PP, and then it dawned on me. 50K DEC a plot, no thank you. Time to pivot to GF Epics and one or two bcx per slot. So my point, alot lower PP per plot over a tract than you'd maybe think initially.

You have a Castle !!!, nice, grats!

Although the csstle ain't worth much if peops aren't maxing out their PP! But I can't really complain either!
