Profit Isn’t a Dirty Word—But It Isn’t Everything, Either
It's a standard of leftist newspapers: when a company posts record profits it gets lambasted, usually contrasted with the struggles of ordinary people feeling the pinch.
But many people have a pretty warped idea of how much profit businesses actually make. Harry Wallop brought this up in The Times, sharing a survey that was eye-opening. People guessed that pubs pocket around 40% profit, energy firms a massive 57%, and supermarkets 50%. However these numbers are way-off...
Most supermarkets scrape by on a margin of just 2–5%. Pubs bring in even less than that. Even successful companies earn way less than people tend to think.
I remember one pub owner I spoke to said he broke even at around 13.00 on Sunday, if he then had a good late-lunch service/ Sunday evening - that was his profit for the week, that's pretty miserable!
So, why are we so suspicious of profit?
There’s always been a strange attitude towards business in Britain. We cheer on small shops and family businesses, but the bigger a company gets, the more we seem to resent it.
In fairness, sometimes this is justified. Some industries have dodged taxes, paid bosses obscene sums, or squeezed both customers and workers. When prices jump and we feel trapped, seeing companies post profits just stings.
But sometimes, we end up thinking profit alone is some kind of smoking gun...
But without profit, businesses can’t invest, expand, or invent. Profit is what tells entrepreneurs they’re onto something people actually want. If someone comes up with a better idea, or finds a way to run things more efficiently, profit is how the market says, “Well done!”
The dream of earning money is also what persuades people to take risks in the first place. We have smartphones, online shopping, streaming, new medicines: all because someone believed it was worth investing and could actually see some reward.
At the end of the day profitable businesses are the backbone of a healthy economy. Profit funds jobs, sparks innovation, and keeps things moving. But all that falls apart if companies lose the public’s trust. It’s not about whether profit is “good” or “bad”—it’s about making sure the system feels fair, and that profit means success, not exploitation.
If Britain manages that, everyone’s better off.
Companies need profit to survive, but some just seem to have better ethics than others. We've heard about Amazon workers and delivery drivers not getting breaks so they pee in bottles. If the bosses award themselves huge bonuses it's not a great look. I think sometimes people are willing to pay a little more if they actually like the company. I'm thinking of companies like John Lewis or the Co-op. Octopus energy seem to have a good attitude too. We're seeing a lot of businesses get bought up and pumped for short term profit. I think the Spider Man thing about power and responsibility can apply to business as well as super-heroes.
