The Innovation Paradox: Why Better Technology Doesn’t Always Mean We Use Less
We tend to think that New Tech means using less energy, at least if we're swapping like for like - such as with using LED bulbs compared to the old bulb-bulbs - I mean a few watts compared to 60....it sounds like a win-win, for yer wallet and the planet...
But there's a twist in the form of something called Jevons Paradox, and it turns this feel-good story on its head.
The paradox says that when technology gets more efficient, people don’t always use less. In fact, we might end up using even more.
And this paradox is cropping up everywhere these days - from AI and electric cars to all kinds of clever tech aimed at cutting emissions.
Why Efficiency Makes Us Use More
This goes back until at least the 1800s... when steam engines got a whole lot better at using coal. People thought, “Great, now we’ll burn less coal.” Instead, coal use shot up.
When steam tech became more efficient it led into new industries, more factories creating a greater array of stuff using steam power....
The same thing happens again and again. Take LED lights. They’re cheap to run, so we don’t think twice about lighting up our whole backyard or leaving the hallway lights on all night. Lights are everywhere now—in places that would have seemed absolutely nuts a few decades ago.
As things get cheaper and easier, we just use them more.

Will AI Be Any Different?
Now AI is the latest tech raising eyebrows. People hope it’ll mean way less grunt work and result in a boost to productivity. History, though, tells a messier story.
Let’s say AI makes writing reports or crunching data cheaper. What then? Surely the company we work for will just make each worker do more of it. Instead of laying people off, companies might just dive into new projects that were once too slow or expensive. More activity, not always less work for humans.
That’s pretty much what’s happened every time new tech shows up. Productivity goes up, and the whole economy grows right along with it.
And these kind of adaptations aren't something humans are necessarily going to find easy...?!?
And what About Net Zero?
If everything gets more efficient but we just use more, cuts to emissions might not be as big as we’d hoped. Without changes in how we use energy or where our energy comes from won't be enough to cut emissions.
That’s not to say innovation’s a waste of time. Far from it. New technology keeps pushing living standards higher and makes our lives more interesting.
But people always follow incentives. When something costs less and gets easier, we nearly always do more of it.

Thank you so much, sir, for this write-up. I wish everyone would learn from this
I saw something ages ago about the world hitting peak power for lighting as LEDs took over. You probably won't increase the number of lights in your house and any LEDs outside will use minimal power, possibly solar. I think most people in the '1st' world have all the appliances they will use and won't necessarily get more cars. Moving the cars to electric should reduce emissions depending on types of generation. Of course companies want us to keep buying stuff and a lot of it (from China) is pretty cheap. We're stuck in a consumerism dependency.
'Net zero' may not be so easy, but we need to encourage more of a circular economy with easy routes to recycling. Old EV batteries can go for grid storage and eventual re-use of materials.
We need to be smarter. You have to hope 'AI' can help with that.

Energy usage is the basis and measure of civilisation: The Kardashev Scale.
