Watch Out for the “Genius Bubble”
Have we gotten a bit too hooked on “geniuses” in the world of investing?
These days, markets seem quick to put founders and visionary CEOs on a pedestal: not just for what their companies do, but because people think they’re brilliant.
Do we have a bit of a "Cult of the Founder" obsession?
It’s hard to miss how much today’s stock market loves big personalities.
- Elon Musk pops into everyone’s mind.
- Sam Altman.
- Jensen Huang.
- Mark Zuckerberg.
Investors are buying into the people just as much as the businesses. Sometimes more. Founders turn into a mix of celebrity, prophet, and investment thesis all rolled into one.
Once the “genius” label sticks, investors tend to throw traditional valuation rules out of the window. The new logic goes: Exceptional people will always figure things out and make all those sky-high prices make sense eventually.
The SpaceX Example
SpaceX might just be a prime case of this... Investors line up to pay wild valuations because they believe Elon Musk has something special.
And while SpaceX has pulled off feats people thought were impossible, there's also a lot of risk here!
If investors shift focus from real numbers to the personality at the helm, you get expectations that just don’t add up. The story takes over and starts spinning in circles:
- Musk is a genius,
- so obviously SpaceX will win,
- so the valuation makes sense,
- so Musk must be a genius.
This is a fool's spiral, maybe...?!?

This Isn’t New
We’ve seen this before—a lot, actually.
Remember the dot-com boom? All those tech founders with big dreams. Or the railway mania way back in the 1800s—same thing, different industry. Even Dutch tulip mania had its so-called visionaries.
Final Thoughts...
To be fair, founder-led companies often outperform. Research shows founders think bigger and bolder. A lot of the tech giants around today wouldn’t exist without unstoppable people at the top.
Spotting talent is smart. The real problem comes when you start thinking talent has no limits.
