When the Clocks go Back!

I've never been a fan of the clocks 'springing forward' and 'falling back' every 6 months.

This goes back to my doll years - I remember every Monday me and some friends used to stroll to a mate's for our weekly RuneQuest sometime between 18.30-19.30 in the evening and I used to really enjoy in the spring the feeling of the days gradually getting longer every week, like winter's over.

Then in late March, BOOM! All of a sudden it's just unambiguously light for the whole walk, and my feeling of being in tune with the seasons is gone.

Then there was losing that hour of sleep when I was a teacher.

It's better when the clocks go back of course...

I have to admit I actually quite appreciated the extra hour this morning... I managed to get out for a run at 8.00, otherwise it would have been 9.00.

It would have been earlier but I wasted an extra hour on Discord, talking about clocks going back and forward among other things...

It's Europe and the English speaking world mainly.....

I guess this map proves there's no need for daylight savings at all... I mean Japan is on the same latitude as parts of America and they don't bother, neither do two provinces in Canada or 3/4 of the land mass of Australia. Almost NONE of Africa.

Fun fact: Lord Howe island in Australia puts the clocks back and forwards 30 minutes. That'd drive me nuts!

And it kills people (maybe)....

Mainly through increased traffic accidents. I read this in 'Why We Sleep' by Mathew Walker. The theory is people lose an hours sleep in spring when the clocks go forward. There's quite a few studies on it if you dig around, like this one, suggesting there's a 17% increase!

Oh and there's no corresponding reduction when the clocks go back like they did yesterday! There's actually also an increase in accidents in November, but that's mainly attributable to the darker conditions, although potentially due to people driving home in the dark all of a sudden as it gets darker in the evening, the peak accident hours being 16.00 to 19.00.

I'd rather just stick to summer time, or winter time, I don't care which!

I know this won't happen - we had a vote on it sometime ago in the UK and 'politicians said no', so we're stuck with it.

I'm gonna have to take the positives: enjoy my extra hour once a year and celebrate the fact that losing the hour in the spring doesn't really affect me as I set my own working hours, and I can mainly stay off the roads!

I have yet to hear an even remotely 'convincing' argument for disrupting everyone's sleep cycle twice a year. It makes zero sense.

It does seem unnecessary. If people need more daylight they can just adjust their working hours. My neighbour does night shifts so would have to work the extra hour.

I used to work on TV scheduling systems and that change caused issues. You have to deal with the same time happening again.

I bet there's all sorts of little problems, probably easier these days. But yes, adjusting our hours makes a lot more sense!

Some people don't even know how to change the time on their appliances. Luckily some of the modern ones adjust automatically.

It has been stopped since 2017 in my country for daylight savings, how ironic it is.

That's genuinely sad for those that will have to work extra shifts cause of that. The entrepreneurs and people who work from home would be the winners in this case.

AMEN! 😃
I need at least a week to get used to the time change, and then the same thing in the Spring... Plus, the whole thing is on a different level here in Spain as we should be in a different zone from the rest of Europe...

So please, pick one and stick to it! 😃

I love an extra hour of sleep in the morning but equally I hate getting in my bed around 5 pm already because of no daylight anymore. Not to talk about the level of anxiety which increases really fast. I have no clue where this all started but I'd love to give up on this thing and leave the same clock all the year long. I know there were debates about this, but with no conclusion neither this year..

I agree, I want shot of it, it's just an unnecessary JOLT to the system!

Due to my experience when I had most part of my life this clock moving and now when it cancelled in my opinion it was better when we had this forward and backward hours changes. Coz now when it has been cancelled and sunrise comes to you nearly 3-4 a.m. in June you missing big part of light day. The same picture with sunsets, earlier it was enough light at 10-11p.m. and now it's already dark at 9p.m.((
Of course it's my opinion. And maybe it's mistake of government and they choose wrong moment to cancel this season time moving.
Also I never had problems to change my body clocks for 1 hour. And just 2 maybe 3 days and I'm ok, my body synchronized with time.

I prefer it, I like the additional hours in the summer evenings. It just goes to show how time is not real but rather a tool we use to count where we are supposed to be throughout the day while we grind away. Perhaps one day there will be no reason for clocks and we can enjoy, just being!

Ah yes, time as a social construct, which it is of course, one of the pillars of modernity!

One thing I like about blockchain time..... Here in block 17M and whatever it is now!

hahaha yes see! Blockchain doesn't go on sunlight hours of operation. It is constantly on

I was thinking of this yesterday, exactly when I realised I got ready an hour too early, that time is the only social construct that we all collectively have decided to follow rigorously, down to the minute. The dst is obviously useless, or else it wouldn't be such a global debate, yet we're forced to use it.

That's such a pain....I'm in Florida and it has been on our local ballots to do away with all that malarky. It didn't pass the last time, I guess, because we are getting ready to do it again lol.

I want the time that one spends with friends and family to never end and it is a special time to chat with each other and laugh with each other. All the life that is spent in the troubles of a person, then a person should find such moments himself to get peace of mind.

I always looked at it as symbolic of politicians and governments thinking that they have power over time itself, sort of like Pope Gregory dropping 13 days from the calendar in the 16th century.

You've probably got a point there!

Thanks. I just can't see any other legit reason why twice a year they decide it's ok to roll back or spring ahead the clock by an hour.

If you think about it, throughout most of recorded history people simply woke up to the rhythm of nature and got on with their day without having to arbitrarily mess with time.

Changing the clocks has been going on for over 100 years in Britain which is incredible.

I've always liked it to be honest. I get brighter mornings to walk when the clocks change back come winter.
I find all the accident statistics laughable, as if the drivers are not responsible for their own actions, but that's the societies we live in I guess.

One thing that might cause issues if it was stopped is the work link to other countries, they might be an extra hour out potentially costing companies money to compensate.

I actually prefer it when the clocks go back to standard time. I like the fall and winter. Of course that is because I am more of an indoor person. There really is no need to move the clocks back and forth.

Yeah it's an unpleasant, jolt, firmly in the first world problems category at least!

Yeah, those first world problems, oh boy. 😂
I vote for moving them back and leaving them that way.

Ahhh, the age old debate the comes back around every Fall and Spring. There are legitimate and good reasons for having it, though the minor discomfort is understandably annoying. Personally, I like it, almost like a holiday where it marks the time of year and let me know that Fall (or Autumn) has truly taken hold and give me me the bright, beautiful gift of an extra hour of sleep. Thanks for the topic!
