Construction Of My Brooding Pen For My Day Old Chicks.!!

Hello Hivers!!
Welcome to my blog..

So, today I started the construction of my brooding pen for my day old chicks, this is where I will brood the day old chick for at least two weeks before there are been transferred to a much bigger space for fattening and grow out.

This is not the conventional way of brooding chicks in my area and so many don’t see it as a good idea, they prefer brooding the chicks were there will be raised.

With several testimonies I have heard from some poultry farmers, I noticed that when there first start out their poultry business the first time, it comes out well but the subsequent once always have issues and even my brother @peterale had one time pointed to this fact in one of his post sometime and I came to a conclusion that, some of the reasons to this occurrence could be that;
Brooding chicks were older birds have been raised, there is a possibility that the older chick had passed some bacteria, virus or fungus that didn’t die off and can come to attack the newly brooded chicks and since there is still small, they can’t handle it, which causes several mortality .

So, my idea is to have a special unit for brooding chicks after that, it is been cleaned and kept for another brooding.

And secondly, with this brooding method, it can be easy for me to conserve heat within the unit easily and also protection from rodents like rats.
Also, minimise the use of saw dust and all problems that comes with it, like cough in the birds.

The brooding unit is made from wood, the floor of the brooding unit is laid with iron mesh used for poultry. The sides are covered with feed bags and the top is also covered with mesh but of a smaller space.

For the first few weeks, it is going to be covered with carton thereafter it will be removed, then the birds will be able to stand on the wire mesh comfortably.

For me, this is still an ongoing experiment, hope it works well as I envision it to.

a good innovative! Since they'd need some heat to keep them warm at day old, so at what age would you consider to move them from this pen?

Yeah..
I'm thinking 2weeks at most, but depending on their growth rate.
If there grow much faster might move them earlier than 2 weeks..
