Staking Our Cucumber 🥒 Plant with The Interns, on the Multistorey Garden Setup

avatar

Hello Hivers..
Welcome to my Blog!!

During our class discussion we discussed the various importance of staking plants which does not implies to only cucumbers, Plants like tomatoes, peppers also needs to be staked to give them support.

It is critical to stake our plants as they develop in length during their growing stage, especially when producing cucumbers.

Staking allows each plant to grow without bending to the point of breaking the plant and halting growth.

It can also be used to keep the fruit from rotting as it rests on the ground as the stalk grows over time.

Allowing the plant to climb upward after it has been staked allows the plant to receive the necessary sunlight to continue growing.

It can be used to keep the aisles of each row of plants clean and tidy. Overall, it allows the fruit to continue growing successfully.

What are the benefits of staking Plants?

• To provides physical support for plant growth and encourages the establishment of additional branches and veins

• Staking and supporting plants keeps them off the ground and provides us with clean, fresh, and healthy fruits.

• It reduces fruit rot losses when fruit comes into contact with soil.

• it allows for the even distribution of sunshine and exposes the flowers to pollinators.

• It is easier to spray organic pesticide on supported plants.

• Simple nutrient application

• Simpler to harvest

• Plants that are supported make it easier to work around them.
• It conserves space.
. More plants can be grown in a given area.

What Happens If We Do Not Provide Staking?

• Fruit and plants fall to the ground, exposing them to soil borne diseases and fruit rots, resulting in a low yield of the plant.

• Plants causes an impediments during pesticide spraying, nutrition application, and other plant care operations.
• Harvesting difficulty
• Planting area wastage
• Inhibition of new tendril or vein formation in cucumbers.

For our garden we used ropes to stake our cucumber plant to the stake we constructed with bamboo..
