Nepotism: Blessing for Families, Burden for Society

Nepotism has become the norm in our society; people find favours in offices simply because their family is part of the management or it’s a family business; even when they are not qualified enough, they get unfair advantages. This has been happening in our communities for a very long time now, I have seen chases where because a person is family, he is been sent to a branch office sometimes to do nothing but to show up to the office at their will, leave at anytime and even choose whether to perform their daily function or not and whenever this happens, even the management in charge of the branch office has little or to nothing to say.

There have been stories of young people being forced or pushed to work in highly esteemed government institutions, young people who might not be as qualified or as intellectually sound as you, while you are out there seriously looking for job opportunities without any luck.

Family members are paid for doing nearly nothing while you are out there putting in the effort and time to make the company better, and yet your efforts go unnoticed, while your salary remains stagnant or your position feels entirely insecure.

People miss out on employment contracts sometimes not because they are not the most qualified or most experienced, but because there is a family member of someone in power who is also clamouring for the same position. Just last week, I saw a meme of which they were jokingly saying that when a person whose sibling is on the recruitment team comes for a job interview and a question is asked by the sibling, instead of the job seeker to respond to the question, the job seeker simply tells the sibling that the mother had asked them to tell the sibling in the recruitment team to fix them in a position where the payment is much.

The question of whether it is wrong or right for people to use their position and status to create unfair advantages for their loved ones can be seen in different ways. What is wrong today is simply because people have made it seem that way. Life generally has never been fair to anybody, and in a case where you are given an advantage to beat this life, choosing to take advantage of the opportunity to me shouldn’t be questioned.

There is always a moral way to do things, but I believe to me that if someone has worked hard to create that opportunity, it is okay for the person to be allowed to enjoy his hard work. A person doesn’t work hard only to have a direct gain, but a person works hard so that they can make it easier for their loved ones.

Today, I stand with individuals who try to utilise every advantage they have at their disposal for the benefit of their family. I believe that God blesses one for the entire benefit of the family. People affected by the advantage should look for or try to create their own advantage the same way those people were able to.

Nepotism becomes a problem when it blocks opportunity or compromises performance, but when family members are qualified and held accountable, their presence doesn’t necessarily harm the institution.
