Unpaused - Synopsis

Hey there my lovely Hivers. I hope you’re all doing amazing and are in the best of your health. Today I watched a Hindi language movie titled Unpaused. This is an Amazon curation and is an anthology consisting of five brilliant short films clubbed together. The stories are set to breed in the lockdown scenario in urban India. Unpaused is 113 minutes long and is available on Amazon Prime.

The five films present the possible reality we will probably live in a few years from now. It portrays how in the near future we are to get adjusted to the way of life, wearing masks, sanitizing, and distancing ourselves from the rest of the world. These movies basically deliver to us the reckoning for the need for holding on to the people immediately around us in the situation where you don’t have much of a choice to socialize.

The very first part of the anthology is the movie ‘Glitch’ which is set in the future world where Covid has become a part of life, except the variant is Covid-30. The story revolves around two people Ayan and Ayesha. Ahan, who is a hypochondriac virtually goes on dates and meets Ayesha, who is a Covid warrior. This match between a hypo and a warrior seems obnoxious as Ahan freaks out on learning she’s a warrior.

The affection between the two gradually develops beautifully and gets Ahan out of his comfort zone, ready to face the world outside in order to unite with Ayesha. The film shows us how in order to be with the one, you are to leave your fears behind, adapt, and put yourself out there.

The second film titled ‘The Apartment’ is focused to shed light on mental health and depression and how lockdown plays a part in the elevation of the same. Devika, an entrepreneur who runs a magazine is shattered on finding out that her husband is a sex offender and had been abusing women working for the magazine by using his power in the company.

Devika attempts suicide twice but there is someone that shows up at her door both times and indirectly tries to stop her from taking the step. This film radiates hope and importance of giving yourself second chances.

Next up is ‘Rat-a-tat’ featuring a senior citizen named Archana living alone. She has a reputation of being cranky and complaining. She meets a young tenant named Priyanka living upstairs in her building.

When a rat intrudes Priyanka’s home, Archana offers her to live at her place till the rat is out. Gradually, the both of them get closer and Archana puts her guard down while they both share their feelings and experiences.

The fourth film ‘Vishanoo’ portrays economic troubles faced by the lower class. A family of three illegally coops into a vacant luxurious apartment as they cannot afford a home to stay in.

The family tries to settle in and enjoys the amenities available in the fully furnished apartment while also being deeply troubled and anxious. For me, this movie showed me how life goes on, and having troubles is not a full stop.

For the finals, we have ‘Chand Mubarak’ showcasing another elderly woman named Uma who is way too paranoid to trust others. Uma is a pessimistic person who gradually learns to unfurl and connect with an auto-rickshaw driver Riyaz.

Riyaz puts his foot forward to help her out and earns her trust. This turns out to be a very wholesome plot.

Overall, I truly enjoyed watching Unpaused. In my opinion, the characters played could be quite relatable to most. It highlights the need for us to adapt and appreciate our encounters. It shows us how by putting ourselves out there for someone, we could achieve being loved in this lonely locale we are to live through due to the pandemic.
