Deep Dive into SOL Open Interest and Charts Post $14.2M Whale Hack

The crypto market was just shocked by bad news from the solana $SOL network. Based on an initial on chain investigation by specter Investigation that was later validated by ZachXBT, a genesis wallet belonging to one of solana's early whales (Solana OG) was hit by a massive hack. The attacker managed to breach the wallet after detecting unusual unstaking activity.

A total of 180,900 to 181,000 SOL (worth around $14.2 million) was instantly drained by the hacker. On chain tracking data shows the exploiter moved these assets to the ethereum network using cross chain bridging protocols, with one route identified through mayan finance. On ethereum, all the stolen SOL was immediately swapped through multiple transactions into 7,918 ETH to hide the asset trail.

If we dive deeper into the hacker's on chain transaction history, the movement of funds happened incredibly fast within the same block time. The outflow data shows massive SOL balances ranging from small fractions to the largest single transaction of 150,181 SOL ($11.84 million) moving out from the victim wallet (HwtbQ) and going straight into the Theft Wallet (Ffd1o).

Once the assets landed in the hacker's wallet, the escape plan moved directly to the ethereum network. According to on chain records, the hacker used mayan finance smart contracts (Mayancircle and Swiftdest) to bridge the funds into ETH. The swap and bridge transactions clearly show the funds being split into several liquid amounts, such as a transfer of $1.01 million (571.77 ETH) and other hundreds of thousands of dollars in fragments to the hacker's new destination address on ethereum.

Even though there was an instant $14.2 million selling pressure in the spot market due to the hacker's actions, the derivatives market reaction actually showed a very interesting data structure. Looking at the global liquidity map across major exchanges like binance, OKX, and Bybit, the SOL spot price held steady around $78.51.

Surprisingly, professional traders did not panic. Open interest (OI) data on binance stayed strong at $685.46 million, followed by OKX at $242.03 million, and bybit at $522.92 million, with the average long/short ratio sitting above 1, meaning buyers are still dominating the market. A 30% to 40% drop in daily trading volume (24h Volume) on some exchanges indicates that the price drop was just a temporary liquidity sweep rather than mass panic selling.

Let us validate this fundamental condition technically using pure price action on the daily chart. Looking at the big picture, the SOL/USD market structure is still inside a healthy uptrend corridor. The price is currently holding around $78.24, right above the SMA 50 close moving average (the blue line) which acts as dynamic support. The grey box area below at $74.56 has proven to be a strong demand zone that kept the price from falling deeper during the june consolidation. Meanwhile, the stochastic oscillator (5, 3, 3) at the bottom has just left the oversold zone and sits at level 26.21 with lines starting to flatten out, getting ready for a bullish crossover. This is a sign that the selling pressure from the hacker is starting to lose power on the higher timeframe.

To find a solid entry or reentry confirmation, we must drop down to a sharper timeframe, the 4 hour chart. Here, the price action shows a market structure shift that is very trader friendly. After briefly getting rejected by the red resistance block (supply zone) in the $81.620 - $83.200 zone, the price made a healthy pullback to collect liquidity. This correction stopped right at the SMA 50 curve (the blue line) at the $78.24 level. Notice the stochastic iscillator (5, 3, 3) on the 4H timeframe, its position is at levels 66.91 and 48.71, showing there is plenty of momentum room left for buyers to push the price back up toward the $81.620 - $83.200 zone again.

My Opinion

In my personal view as a trader, this $14.2 million whale hack is purely a user level security breach, likely caused by a leaked private key or interacting with a phishing smart contract during the unstaking process. This incident was absolutely not caused by a security flaw in solana's core network system.

From a market psychology standpoint, this hack actually created a fakeout scenario that wiped out weak retail leverage positions. Considering solana's institutional fundamentals are getting stronger after the clear digital commodity classification and the upcoming Alpenglow upgrade that will cut transaction finality down to 150 milliseconds, this price drop to the SMA 50 area is an ideal buy on weakness discount zone.

If bitcoin or the overall crypto market stays in good shape, the short term target remains a retest of the closest resistance area in the $81.620 - $83.200 zone. If the bullish momentum continues and breaks through that area with a clean break, the path toward the next strong resistance zone at $97.780 - $99.990 will open up very wide for solana.
