Battle Against Ants... 4th Report [Eng/Esp]

Ants are one of the pests that most often affect the plants in our home and since we can't use poison since we have pets we have had to figure out how to protect them. In this case with a kind of platform away from the ground with a "trap " of water so that they cannot climb to the plants.

Happy #hivegarden friends, I hope you are feeling great! Today I want to share with you the progress of our tomato and paprika seedlings planted in eggshells.

For those who have not been following the story from the beginning, we have 6 paprika plants and 14 tomato plants of two different species that germinated in a seedbed of eggshells and that we managed to transplant successfully, since they are all evolving as expected.

Although the ideal would be to plant them directly in the ground, the ants quickly destroy them from their roots and I end up frustrated and sad to see so much effort and care lost, so we saw as an alternative for them to create a platform that had its base in water so that the ants do not reach our plants and we can harvest.

For now they are growing and we were able to place them all on a single platform but we are looking for some kind of organic or homemade solution that will allow us to control the ants and plant them directly in the ground, but in the meantime they will remain as they are now.

To put them a little in context the last thing we did was to transplant them in plastic bags and place them in our windows which is where they have been since they germinated, and as you can see in the pictures some are bigger than others.

This is because we transplanted them at different times because we ran out of fertilized soil and some had to wait, and this is where we see how important it is for them to have a good amount of soil to develop, because there are some huge and one very small, even though they germinated at the same time, however I know that at some point they will all be equal.

As I told you from the moment we made the seedbed, the plan was to build a platform for them when they were the right size, and finally it was time to do it a few days ago.

For this we used recycled material as we have done since the beginning of this project, so we used margarine containers, plastic cups and a small door that we used to restrict the passage to the patio.

The idea of this is to keep the plants off the ground and protect them from the ants, because even if they are not planted directly on the ground it is incredible how they climb up to feed and consequently damage the plants.

The first thing we did was to choose the place where to place the platform and as our bunny is free in the patio we decided to place it in the porch of the house where they receive enough sunlight in spite of being under roof, since Brownie enjoys to morsdiqueando everything what he sees!

Once the place was defined we placed 4 margarine containers on the floor and filled them with water, then we filled the cups with moist soil and placed the wooden door on them, making sure that none of the ornamental plants had contact with the wooden base, since the ants could climb up using them as bridges.

Ready the platform we placed each one of our seedlings and today they are already a week old and growing quite fast, to the point that all the paprika and some tomato plants already have buds that will flower soon, which of course makes us very happy, but we are also thinking about how to plant them safely in the ground or place a platform big enough for all of them because of course we will have to transplant them to a bigger and more definitive place.

For the time being we continue taking care of them and watching them closely, attentive to their progress to change them when we notice that the space is getting too small for them.

We are really happy to see the great progress they have made. Hopefully we can find a way to protect them from ants that will not affect our pets. Anyway, I will be telling you what is happening with them.

Las hormigas son una de las plagas que con más frecuencia afectan a las plantas en nuestro hogar y en vista de no poder usar veneno ya que tenemos mascotas hemos tenido que ingeniarnosla para protegerlas. En éste caso con una especie de plataforma alejada del suelo con una "trampa" de agua para que no puedan subir a las plantas.

Feliz día amigos de #hivegarden, espero se encuentren súper bien! El día de hoy quiero compartir con ustedes los avances de nuestras plantitas de tomate y pimenton sembradas en cáscaras de huevo.

Para los que no han seguido la historia desde el principio, tenemos 6 plantas de pimentón y 14 de tomate de dos especies diferentes que germinaron en un semillero de cáscaras de huevo y que logramos transplantar con éxito, ya que todas están evolucionando de acuerdo a lo esperado.

Aunque lo ideal sería poder sembrarlas directamente en la tierra, las hormigas rápidamente las destruyen desde sus raíces y termino frustrada y triste al ver tanto esfuerzo y cuidado perdido, así que vimos como alternativa para ellas crear una plataforma que tuviese su base dentro de agua para que las hormigas no lleguen a nuestras plantas y poder cosechar.

Por ahora están en crecimiento y pudimos ubicarlas a todas en una sola plataforma pero estamos buscando algún tipo de solución orgánica o casera que nos permita controlar las hormigas y sembrarlas directamente en el suelo, pero mientras tanto se mantendrán como hasta ahora.

Para ponerlos un poco en contexto lo último que hicimos fué transplantarlas en bolsas plásticas y ubicarlas en nuestras ventanas que es donde han estado desde que germinaron, y como pueden ver en las imágenes algunas están más grandes que otras.

Esto se debe a que las transplantamos en momentos diferentes debido a que se nos agotó la tierra abonada y algunas tuvieron que esperar, y es aquí donde vemos la importancia que tienen para ellas contar con una buena cantidad de tierra para poder desarrollarse, pues hay unas enormes y una muy pequeñas, aún cuando germinaron al mismo tiempo, sin embargo sé que en algún punto todas estarán iguales.

Como les comenté desde el momento en que hicimos el semillero, el plan era armar una plataforma para ellas cuando tuviesen el tamaño adecuado, y finalmente llegó el momento de hacerlo hace unos días.

Para ello utilizamos material reciclado como hemos hecho desde el principio de éste proyecto, así que utilizamos envases de margarina, vasos plásticos y una pequeña puerta que usábamos para restringir el paso al patio.

La idea de esto es mantener las plantas alejadas del suelo y protegerlas del avance de las hormigas, pues aunque no estén sembradas directamente en el suelo es increíble cómo trepan para alimentarse y en consecuencia dañan las plantas.

Lo primero que hicimos fue escoger el lugar donde ubicar la plataforma y como nuestro conejito está libre en el patio decidimos ubicarla en el porche de casa donde reciben suficiente luz solar a pesar de estar bajo techo, ya que Brownie disfruta morsdiqueando todo lo que ve!

Una vez definido el lugar ubicamos 4 envases de margarina en el piso y los llenamos con agua, seguidamente llenamos los vasos de tierra húmeda y sobre ellos colocamos la puerta de madera, asegurándonos que ninguna de las plantas ornamentales tuviese contacto con la base de madera, ya que las hormigas podrían subir usándolas como puentes.

Lista la plataforma fuimos ubicando cada una de nuestras plantitas y al día de hoy ya tienen una semana en ella creciendo bastante rápido, al punto que todas las de pimentón y algunas de tomate ya tiene botones que pronto florecerán, cosa que por supuesto nos tiene muy felices, pero también pensando en cómo sembrarlas de manera segura en la tierra o ubicar una plataforma lo suficientemente grande para todas porque por supuesto tendremos que transplantarlas a un lugar más grande y definitivo.

Por lo pronto las seguimos cuidando y vigilando de cerca, atentos a sus progresos para cambiarlas cuando notemos que el espacio les va quedando pequeño.

Estamos felices la verdad de ver los grandes avances que han tenido. Ojalá logremos dar con una forma de protegerla de las hormigas que no afecten a nuestras mascotas. De cualquier manera ya les estaré contando qué va sucediendo con
