Visiting the "Museo Marino" in Margarita Island [Esp/Eng]

The Marine Museum is one of the most emblematic places in the state of Nueva Esparta, one of those that you can not miss, whether you are a tourist or a resident. So if you haven't been, put it on your list of things to do.

Located on the Macanao Peninsula, specifically in the small town of Boca del Rio, it is a huge building, located in front of a simply incredible boardwalk. Views that you can only enjoy in this magical place.

To get there you must cross the bridge that connects the Macanao Peninsula with the rest of the island, which in itself makes the road trip worthwhile, because depending on where you are, it is quite a secluded place.

In my case, for example, it can take us more than an hour and a half to get there, but as I say, it is a destination worth every minute of the road, and once you take the road that leads to the Macanao Peninsula, the scenery changes completely, to finally find this beauty of colonial architecture that is the Marine Museum.

Its imposing facade, a building that occupies an entire block, with high and thick walls covered with stone slabs that give it a beautiful appearance, and as I said, quite imposing.

Upon entering, you find a beautiful colonial architecture, lots of white, tiles, wood and several internal courtyards, which immediately take you to another era.

The first thing you see when you enter is the price list and the ticket office, and as soon as you take a few steps, right in front of you, a huge whale skeleton. On the right side is an outdoor aquarium for sea turtles, and on the right side is the main building, where you are greeted by a good-sized replica of a fishing boat.

Just behind the boat is one of the internal patios, with its terracotta floors and plants all over the place, which undoubtedly add life to the place.

As you can see, it is sort of a big square, including the entrance area which is open, made up of a two-story building, with beautiful balconies with wooden railings, tiles and gorgeous exhibits arranged in every little space. Everywhere you look there is something interesting to see.

Replicas of different boats, samples of seashells, photographs, divers' costumes, murals and so on. You really need hours to enjoy everything the place has to offer.

The museum is divided by rooms, and each one has different exhibits and specialized guides that give you a very complete tour, from which you leave with a lot of interesting information.

There is a room exclusively for corals, this was my favorite of the whole trip, and is composed of a wide variety of corals, from the smallest, to huge samples. In addition, its walls are full of photographs of corals under love, and this is just too beautiful.

They also have an invertebrate room, where you can find all kinds of species, from miniature snails to simply enormous ones. There are many species of sea urchins, starfish, crabs, and even a giant squid.

Another quite striking exhibition is the one of vertebrates and marine mammals, with a huge and very well organized sample. They have many specimens, both stuffed and complete skeletons of some species, or parts of them.

This room is the children's favorite, because there are dolphins, shark skeletons, huge sea turtle shells and stuffed species, which is very exciting for them to see.

For my part, I loved the lighting, the size of the rooms and the comfort to move around, besides having air conditioning to make the visit really pleasant.

Another room I loved is the one dedicated to carpintería de ribera, which is the one dedicated to the craft elaboration of boats. There is a beautiful display of different boats and boats made to scale that leave you in love and amazed at the skill of our people. Works made completely by hand and from scratch.

In fact, they have to scale the step by step construction of one of these fishing boats, and beautiful photographs throughout the room. In addition to fishing implements, also handmade by fishermen or artisans of the sea.

It is incredible the amount of detail in each replica, and you can realize the enormous work that goes into each one, but can you imagine what it is like to do this on a real scale? Simply amazing, and Nueva Esparta has the best shipwrights in our country.

They have other smaller rooms dedicated to diving and underwater fishing, but they were being remodeled and the exhibition windows were empty, but they usually show implements used in underwater fishing, as well as a beautiful exhibition of pearls, which is one of the island's specialties.

Another room that follows this same style, is the virtual aquarium, is a kind of audiovisual room, tiny, quite cold, and organized as a movie theater to watch videos about marine life.

This is part of the tour and you can take the opportunity to rest a little bit, I really didn't want to get out of there, darkness and cold are my favorite things (laughs).

One of the exhibits that many people are dying to see is the aquariums, and the Marine Museum has two types of aquariums, one indoor and one outdoor.

The indoor one, so to speak, is in a separate building from the main building, is quite a bit smaller, and has aquariums distributed along three walls. Low light, illuminated tanks, good air, and beautiful species is what makes this part of the tour really enchanting.

And in the outside aquariums we find the tender sea turtles, some starfish, and even a baby shark.

As you can see, it is a unique experience and definitely not to be missed if you come on vacation to Isla Margarita, and even if you live on the island.

Each exhibit tells a story, and don't think this is all I'm showing you, in fact I missed some rooms to name and show you, but I have to leave you something for when you can visit.

Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and interesting experiences I have been able to enjoy, and I have been there many times, and I could go many more. Every day I am surprised by something new, something I did not see in the previous visit, so each one is a different experience.

El Museo Marino es uno de los lugares más emblemáticos del Estado Nueva Esparta, uno de esos que no puedes dejar de visitar, tanto si eres turista como si eres residente. Así que si no has ido, anótalo en tu lista de cosas por hacer.

Ubicado en la Península de Macanao, específicamente en el pueblito de Boca del Río, es una edificación enorme, ubicada frente a un malecón simplemente increíble. Vistas que solo puedes disfrutar en este mágico lugar.

Para llegar a él debes cruzar el puente que conecta a la península de Macanao con el resto de la Isla, lo que de por sí ya hace que el trayecto de carretera valga muchísimo la pena, ya que dependiendo de donde te encuentres es un lugar bastante retirado.

En mi caso, por ejemplo, nos puede tomar más de hora y media llegar a él, pero como les digo, es un destino que vale cada minuto de carretera, y una vez que tomas la vía que conduce hasta la Península de Macanao, el escenario va cambiando por completo, para finalmente encontrarte con esta belleza de la arquitectura colonial que ea el Museo Marino.

Su fachada imponente, una edificación que ocupa una cuadra entera, con altos y gruesos muros recubiertos de lajas de piedras que le dan un aspecto hermoso, y como ya dije, bastante imponente.

Al entrar, te encuentras con una bellísima arquitectura colonial, mucho blanco, tejas, madera y varios patios internos, que te trasladan de inmediato a otra época.

Lo primero que te encuentras al entrar, es el listado de precios y la taquilla, y apenas das unos pasos, justo frente a ti, un esqueleto de ballena enorme. Al lado derecho un acuario externo para las tortugas marinas, y del lado derecho la edificación principal, donde de entrada te recibe una réplica de buen tamaño de una embarcación de pesca.

Justo detrás de la embarcación, está uno de los patios internos, con sus pisos de terracota y plantas por todos lados que sin duda le aportan vida al lugar.

Como ven, es una especie de gran cuadrado, incluyendo la zona de la entrada que está abierta, formada por un edificio de dos pisos, con unos hermosos balcones con barandales de madera, tejas y bellísimas piezas de exposición dispuestas en cada pequeño espacio. A donde mires hay algo interesante que ver.

Réplicas de distintas embarcaciones, muestras de conchas marinas, fotografías, trajes de buzos, murales y pare de contar. La verdad necesitas horas para poder disfrutar de todo lo que ofrece el lugar.

El Museo, se encuentra divido por salas, y cada una cuenta con exposiciones diferentes, y guías especializados que te hacen un recorrido bastante completo, del que te vas con muchísima información interesante.

Hay una sala exclusiva para los corales, esta fue mi favorita de todo el trayecto, y está compuesta por una gran variedad de corales, desde los más pequeños, hasta muestras enormes. Además, sus paredes están llenas de fotografías de los corales bajo el amor, y esto es demasiado bello.

También cuentan con una sala de invertebrados, donde puedes encontrar todo tipo de especies, como caracolas tamaño miniatura hasta unas simplemente enormes. Hay muchísimas especies de erizos, estrellas de mar, cangrejos, y hasta un calamar gigante.

Otra exposición bastante llamativa es la de los vertebrados y mamíferos marinos, con una muestra enorme, y muy bien organizada. Tienen muchísimos ejemplares, tanto disecados, como esqueletos completos de algunas especies, o parte de ellos.

Esta sala es la favorita de los niños, porque hay delfines, esqueletos de tiburones, enormes caparazones de tortugas marinas y especies disecadas, que para ellos resulta súper emocionante de ver.

Por mi parte, amé la iluminación, lo grande de las salas y la comodidad para desplazarte, además de contar con aire acondicionado para que la visita sea realmente placentera.

Otra sala que amé, es la dedicada a la carpintería de ribera, que es la dedicada a la elaboración artesanal de embarcaciones. Hay una muestra preciosa de distintos botes y lanchas elaborados a escala que te dejan enamorado y sorprendido de la habilidad de nuestra gente. Trabajos hechos completamente a mano y desde cero.

De hecho, tienen a escala el paso a paso de la construcción de una de estas embarcaciones de pesca, y bellas fotografías en toda la sala. Además de implementos de pesca, también hecho a mano por los pescadores o artesanos del mar.

Es increíble la cantidad de detalles en cada réplica, y te puedes dar cuenta del enorme trabajo que hay en cada una, pero ¿te imaginas lo que es hacer esto en una escala real? Simplemente asombroso, y Nueva Esparta cuenta con los mejores carpinteros de ribera de nuestro país.

Cuentan con otras salas más pequeñas dedicadas a la actividad del buceo y pesca submarina, pero estaba en remodelación y las vidrieras de exposiciones estaban vacías, pero en ellas se suelen mostrar implementos utilizados en la pesca submarina, además de una exposición bellísima de perlas, que es una de las bondades de la isla.

Otra sala que sigue este mismo estilo, es el acuario virtual, es una especie de sala audiovisual, pequeñita, bastante fría, y organizada como sala de cine para ver vídeos sobre la vida marina.

Esta forma parte del recorrido y puedes aprovechar de descansar un poquito, yo la verdad no me quería salir de ahí, oscuridad y frío son de mis cosas favoritas (risas).

Una de las exposiciones que muchos mueren por ver, es la de acuarios, y el Museo Marino cuenta con dos tipos, unos internos y uno externo.

El que se encuentra bajo techo, por decirlo de alguna manera, se encuentra en una edificación aparte de la principal, es un bastante más pequeña, y cuenta con acuarios distribuidos a lo largo de tres paredes. Poca luz, peceras iluminadas, buen aire, y especies preciosas es lo que hace que esta parte del recorrido sea realmente encantadora.

Y en los acuarios externos encontramos a las tiernas tortugas marinas, algunas estrellas de mar, y hasta un tiburón bebé.

Como ven, es una experiencia única y que definitivamente no te puedes perder si vienes de vacaciones a isla margarita, e incluso si vives en la isla.

Cada exposición cuenta una historia, y no se crean que es solo esto que les muestro, de hecho me faltaron salas por nombrar y mostrar, pero tengo que dejarles algo para cuando puedan visitarlo.

Sin lugar a dudas una de las experiencias más lindas e interesantes que he podido disfrutar, y miren que he ido muchísimas veces, y pudiese ir muchas más. Cada día me sorprende algo nuevo, algo que no vi en la visita anterior, así que cada una es una experiencia diferente.
