Some Animal Species in the Maracay Zoo
Greetings, Amazing Nature friends! I'm here to share with you a post where I talk about some of the animal species that I was able to observe in my visit to my hometown Zoo, located in Maracay, Venezuela, which had been recently reopened. Although I am not in favor of the idea of keeping animals in captivity, the fact that the new administration of this zoo had proposed an alternative vision of animal care and rescue caught my attention and I decided to visit it.
¡Saludos, amigos de Amazing Nature! Me encuentro por acá para compartirles un post donde hablo de algunas especies animales que pude observar en mi visita al Zoológico de mi ciudad, ubicado en Maracay, Venezuela, que había sido recientemente reinaugurado. Aunque no soy partidaria de la idea de tener animales en cautiverio, el hecho de que la nueva administración de este recinto planteara una visión alternativa en cuanto al cuidado y rescate de los animales llamó mi atención y me decidí ir a conocerlo.
I started my tour visiting the wild pigs, whose scientific name is Hylochoerus Meinertzhageni. The The pigs were introduced by the Spaniards from Africa during the colonial period and have had an excellent adaptation in the last 500 years.
Inicié mi paseo visitando a los Cerdos Salvajes, de nombre científico Hylochoerus Meinertzhageni. Los cerdos fueron introducidos por los españoles desde áfrica durante la época de la colonia y han tenido una excelente adaptación en los últimos 500 años.
I was also able to observe many Morrocoyes (Chelonoidis Carbonaria) and Galapagos (Chelonoidis Niger), close relatives of the turtle family, only the former are terrestrial and the latter spend most of their lives in the aquatic environment.
Pude observar también muchos Morrocoyes (Chelonoidis Carbonaria) y galápagos (Chelonoidis Niger), parientes cercanos, de la familia de las tortugas, solo que los primeros son terrestres y los segundos pasan gran parte de su vida en el entorno acuático.
Another reptile that I was able to see during my visit was the Coastal Cayman (Crocodylus Acutus). This animal can weigh up to 430 kilos and lives about 50 years, inhabiting the coasts of the Caribbean Sea and the mouths of the rivers. This particular specimen, named Patanemo, had just been rescued and was being recovered.
Otro reptil que pude apreciar durante mi visita fue el Caimán de la Costa (Crocodylus Acutus), Este animal puede llegar a pesar hasta unos 430 kilos y vive unos 50 años, habitando las costas del mar caribe y las embocaduras de los ríos. Este ejemplar en particular que tiene por nombre Patanemo, había sido recién rescatado y estaba siendo recuperado.
I was also able to see up close the imposing Orinoco Caiman (Crocodylus Intermedius), which lives exclusively in the Orinoco River basin in Venezuela and parts of Colombia, feeds mainly on piranha fish and can reach a length of 7 meters.
También pude ver de cerca al imponente Caimán del Orinoco (Crocodylus Intermedius), que habita exclusivamente la cuenca del rio Orinoco en Venezuela y partes de Colombia, se alimenta principalmente de pez piraña y puede llegar a medir unos 7 metros.
One of the beautiful felines found in this enclosure is the Jaguar, a species in danger of extinction, whose scientific name is Panthera Onca; it is native to Venezuela and other countries in America. The jaguar is a robust animal, with great capacity to climb, swim and even dive.
Uno de los hermosos felinos que se encuentran en este recinto es el Jaguar, una especie en amenaza de peligro de extinción, cuyo nombre científico es Panthera Onca; es originario de Venezuela y otros países de América. El jaguar es un animal robusto, con gran capacidad de trepar, nadar y hasta bucear.
There were other felines in the zoo but most of them were resting in some corner, out of sight of the visitors.
The Maracay Zoo has the largest aviary in all of South America, let's see some specimens.
Había otros felinos en el zoológico pero la mayoría estaba descansando en algún rincón, fuera de la visual de los visitantes.
El Zoológico de Maracay tiene el aviario más grande de toda América del Sur, vamos a ver algunos ejemplares.
Among the most exuberant birds I could see is the Harpy Eagle, scientific name Harpia Harpyja. It is the largest in the southern and western hemisphere, can weigh up to 9 kilos and lives about 40 years. It is located in the coastal mountain range.
Entre las aves más exuberantes que pude ver está el Águila Arpía, de nombre científico Harpia Harpyja. Es la más grande del hemisferio sur y occidental, puede pesar hasta 9 kilos y vive unos 40 años. Se localiza en la cordillera de la costa.
Among the most colorful birds I saw, I would like to highlight the Scarlet Macaw, or Ara Macao. Their vibrant colors attract a lot of attention. They usually communicate by vocalizations and squawks; they are considered very sociable birds. I was also able to see blue/yellow macaws.
Entre las aves más coloridas que vi quiero destacar el Guacamayo rojo, o Ara Macao. Sus vibrantes colores llaman mucho la atención. Se suelen comunicar mediante vocalizaciones y graznidos; son consideradas aves muy sociables. También pude ver guacamayos azul/amarillos.
Another very beautiful and robust bird is the Curly-crested Curassow or Crax Daubentoni, a species exclusive to the Americas, especially the tropical forests, with shiny black plumage.
Otra ave muy hermosa y robusta es el Paují Copete Rizado o Crax Daubentoni, una especie exclusiva de América, especialmente de los bosques tropicales, con un plumaje negro brillante.
One of the most majestic birds I was able to observe is the Andean Condor, scientific name Vultur Gryphus. It is the largest flying bird in existence, can weigh up to 15 kilos and lives about 70 years. It feeds on carrion and is located in the Andes Mountains.
Una de las aves más majestuosas que pude observar se encuentra el Cóndor de los Andes, de nombre científico Vultur Gryphus. Es la mayor ave voladora que existe, puede pesar hasta 15 kilos y vive unos 70 años. Se alimenta de carroña y se localiza en la Cordillera de los Andes.
Likewise, I enjoyed seeing the ostriches, whose scientific name is Struthio Camelus, the largest and fastest of the birds, and although they cannot fly, they have a great capacity and agility to run.
Del mismo modo, disfruté ver a los avestruces, cuyo nombre científico es Struthio Camelus, es la más grande y más rápida de las aves, y aunque no pueden volar, tienen una gran capacidad y agilidad para correr.
I could not fail to mention the King Zamuro or Sarcoramphus Papa, of the vulture family, a very important bird in the cleaning of the environment because it is a scavenger. It can live up to 30 years and measure about 2 meters.
No podía dejar de mencionar al Rey Zamuro o Sarcoramphus Papa, de la familia de los zopilotes, un ave muy importante en la limpieza del medio ambiente por ser carroñera. Puede vivir hasta 30 años y medir unos 2 metros.
Finally, in the contact farm area I could see some Alpacas and Llamas, both species related to African camels and very common in South America, which caught my attention.
Para finalizar les comento que en el área de granja de contacto pude ver unas Alpacas y Llamas, ambas especies emparentadas con los camellos africanos y muy comunes en el sur de américa, que llamaron mucho mi atención.
There are many animals that inhabit this zoo; here I only named some of them. The truth is that I saw that the conditions of the place were quite appropriate and I knew that many of these animals were rescued and some have been and will be returned to their natural habitat once they have recovered and that the conditions are given. Son muchos los animales que habitan en este zoológico; aquí solo nombré algunos. La verdad es que vi que las condiciones del lugar eran bastante apropiadas y supe que muchos de estos animales fueron rescatados y algunos han sido y serán devueltos a su hábitat natural una vez se hayan recuperado y que las condiciones estén dadas. Por lo que pude notar hay bastante variedad de animales en el zoológico y además están muy bien cuidados. Particularmente me gustaron mucho las fotos de las guacamayas, son realmente hermosas y coloridas.
Por otro lado, me gusta saber que hay un nuevo manejo en el cuidado de animales y que incluso devuelven algunos a su hábitat natural, es una linda labor de rescate y mantenimiento de nuestra fauna.
Así es, ese nuevo enfoque del zoológico de Maracay es positivo, en general nunca me ha gustado la idea de tener animales en cautiverio.
