Oderzo, a heritage city of the Roman era / Одерцо, місто римської епохи (En/Ua)
Hello to all fans of visiting more and more new places!
If I can't take a short trip for a long time, I feel like I'm not on my plate. "I miss looking out the window as the rain falls. As the sky thickens with clouds.
This morning I woke up and realized that the weather would be good. The bright sun was shining on the street. The wind dispersed the clouds. The sky was blue. It's time to go.
My journey today lies northeast of Treviso to the town of Oderzo. It is located 30 kilometers from Treviso.
I'm going to meet Oderzo. The city has a long history. The first mention of the settlement was in the first century BC. The city had great development and prosperity in time
domination of the Roman Empire. Emperor Julius Caesar rewarded the city for its loyalty to the Romans and released the inhabitants from military service for 20 years. The city began a demographic boom.
Large-scale construction began. The Forum was also restructured. Between the first and second centuries AD, the Oderzo flourished most. But the decline of the Roman Empire led to an influx of troops who destroyed, burned and plundered the city. The townspeople were forced to flee to the islands. It was not until 1000 that Oderzo slowly began to adjust to his life. Residents rebuilt the city, built a defensive fortification. After the 13th century, a new history of the Oderzo begins.
It's sunny today. But you can safely come to the Oderzo in rainy weather. Even without an umbrella. And enjoy the architecture of the city, walking under the arcades. Oderzo is considered the city with the largest number of arcades.
The city with beautiful houses in Gothic and Renaissance style attracts my attention. And, of course, a bush of roses with beautiful flowers does not pass.
I see in front of me the church of Santa Maria Maddalena, which was built in 1000. Throughout its history, the church has been rebuilt many times. The church was a functioning monastery for Dominican nuns until the 16th century, when Napoleon suppressed the order.
Along the road I see beautiful houses. They are all different. Not similar to each other. But everything is very beautiful and I stand and can not leave. The special charm of the city is given by the river Montecano, which flows and divides the city into two parts. The river flows into Livenz and carries its waters south to the Adriatic Sea.
The bell tower of the church, which is named after John the Baptist, rises above the city. With its powerful bell, it announces sad and good news. And also reflects every hour. Today I also managed to hear the bell notifying inhabitants that the third hour came.
The city park stretches on the left side. I went to the park to admire such a bright beauty of the trees. The end of November, but many trees are still in their colorful decoration. In the park I see a monument to Luigi Luzzetti. I later learned from Wikipedia that he was an Italian politician and statesman.
But my main attention is still to the park itself, which is adorned with all the colors of autumn. These are yellow ocher, red copper, greenish brass, brown bronze, pale yellow and orange-yellow gold. Against the background of these colors I take a lot of photos. It's quiet and peaceful here. It's nice to sit on a bench or just walk the paths covered with fallen leaves.
I like to look at the sky through the treetops
In front of the city gates I walk on footpaths along the river. I look at the houses, trees and the bell tower as if reflected in a mirror on the river bed. Houses with colorful terraces are very well maintained. Decorated with flower pots. One house wrapped in wild grapes looks very original. Many shops and cafes. I look at the frescoes that adorn the walls of houses that still retain color.
Through the city gates I go to the Duomo. This is the largest square in the Oderzo, completely pedestrian. Torrezin City Gate has a large clock. You can always check the time. The square is decorated with a majestic church named after John the Baptist. Both outside and inside the church is decorated with ancient frescoes by famous Italian artists. The church was built in about 1000 and consecrated in 1536. The church was rebuilt many times until it became as it is today.
After inspecting the square, I go out to the river Montecano. The river flows between high embankments. The shafts offer a magnificent view. The water is blue, blue as the sky today. I stand, fascinated by this beauty. Since the river flows through the city, there are many bridges. Bridges also adorn the city.
The church was built in the late 1600s by a wealthy Feltre family, dedicated to the monk preacher Beato Bernardino Tomiano. The church has places where photos of citizens who died during various wars are exhibited.
As a result of excavations by archaeologists in Oderzo, the remains of the Roman Forum were discovered. You can see the walls, the column. You can also see the well. The whole place is covered with an archeological glass dome.
I take the narrow street to Duomo again. And further I continue to inspect houses. For example, my attention was drawn to a house with geometric patterns on the facade. Famine, wars, epidemics, fires could not erase the beautiful ornaments from the walls!
The sound of water catches my attention. I see the river breaking free from under the bridge. I listen and watch ...
Persimmon grows in the middle of the city. The whole small tree is strewn like light bulbs with orange fruits that glow in the sun.
My tour is coming to an end because the sun sets so fast behind the mountains. You need to go home. There is still a lot to see in Oderzo. But I hope that in winter I will try to come again and see in detail all the beauties. And of course, to share with you, dear readers!
See you in the hive!
