When you are in your village, you are a king on your lane but when you get to another city you are just a stranger, that was what Iyabeji (my mom) always tells me and my sisters. But because over-smartness is worrying me I don't listen to all that, ever since I was small people always told me that I was brilliant, and that made me feel special among my peers to the extent that I thought I knew everything.

But I was wrong which was unclear to me until I got into the university, I lived in Ogun state ever since I was little but then when I grew up I wanted to have another city experience so I chose Lagos State Polytechnic Institute and of course, I got the admission, what a smart girl, lol 😂 am bragging again don't mind me. My first day in Lagos taught me a lesson I will never forget in my life, I got to Ikorodu safely because that was simple.

When it was time to go to isolo for lectures my elder sister told me where to get a bus but I wasn’t listening because I thought I was smart enough to figure everything out, and she told me never to ask people for directions when I get to Lagos. Me that am proud before, I don't like asking so I took Napep to ikorodu garage and I was dropped somewhere at ikorodu garage but because I didn't want to ask I just got down and then started listening to all the conductors at Ikorodu garage, waiting for the one that would call isolo.

There was one conductor in my front shouting, "Wosho... Wosho... Wosho" I was laughing at him that which bus stop is wosho, I stood there for an hour and later some of those guys came to ask me where I was going because I didn't leave that spot, I was still forming big girl meanwhile my sister told me not to ask for directions so I looked at them with a bad eye and they left.

Exactly 1 hour 30 minutes I was tired of waiting already so I called my sister to inform her, I described where I was standing and she said that was where I would enter Oshodi and when I got to Oshodi I would see isolo. I laughed at her and told her, "All the conductors here were not going to Oshodi," she was surprised and asked me what they were saying, I told her they were just shouting, "Wosho, wosho".

My sister laughed at me and then told me that was Oshodi and that was what they normally call it, meanwhile, some of the conductors heard me while I was talking on the phone, so all of them started laughing at me because I thought I was smart. One of them came to my side when I dropped the call and then asked which state I came from, but I couldn't answer him because I was ashamed.

I thought I was smart enough to come to Lagos, I thought all the big girls I always do in Ogun state would help me when I get to Lagos but I was totally wrong, Lagos should be a course on its own for people that wants to live there.

When I finally got to isolo all the important lectures had finished I got there and I was angry at myself for not listening to my sister when she was giving me directions. That was when I knew that I wasn't smart because the way people live in Lagos is totally different from Ogun state own.

While I was going back to ikorodu, the way they were calling ikorodu too was different, all I was hearing was, "Kodu... Kodu.... Kodu" I couldn't cry because I didn't receive lectures and the kodu didn't sound like where I was going so I didn't have a choice but to ask my sister on the phone again that they were calling "Kodu" and not "Ikorodu".

Here in Ogun state conductors called bus-stop clearly but in Lagos, only God knows what is happening with those conductors.

That's how it normally is when you go to another man's state, but with time you will adapt to it, and before a month or less, Lagos will just look in your eyes like Ogun state, and you will know all routes and directions.

Those few places you know will surely help you to navigate the city when next you visit there, it's always hard on the first start, but as time goes on, things started flowing fluently.

Logos conductors can be confusing, they call bus-stop as if they have hot yam in their mouth.

You learned from your mistake and I believe that you are familiar with these names nkn

This was epic 😂 This entire article represents one of the reasons why I can't relocate to Lagos, I will end up not leaving my house at all because of all the confusing ways conductors call out names of bus-stops. This reminds me of the time I got admitted to the university, I was looking for a bus going to a place called isihor but I only heard conductors calling out olukuisyo. I waited for almost an hour until I finally asked one of the drivers where I can see a bus going to Isihor and he told me that all the busses there are going to Isihor, turned out that the conductors were actually calling out 2 places: oluku and isihor, saying it fast sounds like oluku-isyo, isyo is the isihor I was heading to 😂

Lagos! If you are not careful, you will miss your road. My first time in Lagos was in 2017 when I had something to do at the consolate. I went through hell. But because I was also always smart, and rugged, I had my ways even in the midst of the area boys that are always ready to chaos strangers. No dull moment for lasgidi. Na rush hour, that na why conductors no get time to polish passengers destination while calling them in. Eko, ilé ogbon. 😂

But Lagos is cool. If you live in Lagos, and you are able to blend with it, you can adapt to any kind of life else where.
