Reseña del libro Balada de pajaros cantores y serpientes / Review of the book Ballad of Songbirds and Serpents (ENG/ESP)

Al descubrir esta comunidad me puse muy feliz, porque yo siendo una come libros en mi juventud y ahora aunque no tanto, al conseguir un libro con el que conecte suelo leerlo muy rápido, por lo general no tengo con quien compartirlo, aunque mis amigos me escuchan a veces no comparten la emoción de ejemplo los protagonistas quedaron juntos o la tristeza de murió un personaje. Así que espero pasar por aca a compartirles mi reseña e impresiones de los libros que lea y también quiero hacerlo de mi libro super favorito, pero hoy no les contaré cual es, para mantener la intriga.

El día de hoy quiero compartirles mi reseña de la precuela de “Juegos del hambre”, “Baladas de pájaros cantores y serpientes" de Suzanne Collins, publicado el 19 de Mayo del 2020 por la editorial Scholastic Corporation y la versión española la publicó la editorial molino; que nos habla del mundo de los juegos del hambre 11 años después de su creación, si vieron o leyeron los libros de la trilogía se sitúa antes de que conociéramos a Katniss precisamente unos 64 años antes. Ahora puede que no se recuerden o no hayan leído estos libros por eso les daré un breve contexto.

Los hechos de todos los libros se sitúan en el futuro un mundo postapocalíptico, en el cual donde era estados unidos ha surgido un nuevo país llamado Panem que está conformado por su capital llamado capitolio y 13 distritos que serían como sus estados o ciudades, cada uno de ellos se encarga de un rubro en específico ejemplo el 12 del carbón, el 4 de la pesca y así; con la particularidad de que los más beneficiados eran los que vivían en el capitolio mientras que los ciudadanos de los distritos tenían una vida de restricciones.

De ese modo, se inicia una rebelión encabezada por el distrito 13 encargado de las armas nucleares, esa guerra generó fuertes estragos en todas las partes del país y finalmente, el distrito 13 fue derrotado y con él, todos los distritos. Por lo que en el capitolio se crean los juegos del hambre como una manera de recordar que el capitolio es superior. Ahora bien, básicamente los juegos del hambre consisten en elegir dos persona de cada distrito mujer y hombre y enviarlos al capitolio para que se maten entre sí, ganando el último sobreviviente, y sí suena sangriento y no tan apetecible de leer, más alla hay toda una historia.

A continuación les comparto la sinopsis del libro y luego si vendrá mi reseña con opiniones, spoiler y momentos fangirl, entiendan esta trilogía estaba terminada era un ciclo cerrado y viene suzanne y nos regala esta joya que ha hecho que todos los fanáticos de sus libros volvamos a aparecer, en plan “pero como que volví yo no entiendo si yo nunca me fui” (Referencia a un trend de tiktok).

La ambición será su motor. La rivalidad, su motivación. Pero alcanzar el poder tiene un precio. Es la mañana de la cosecha que dará comienzo a los décimos Juegos del Hambre. En el Capitolio, Coriolanus Snow, de dieciocho años, se prepara para una oportunidad única: alcanzar la gloria como mentor de los Juegos. La casa de los Snow, antes tan influyente, atraviesa tiempos difíciles, y su destino depende de que Coriolanus consiga superar a sus compañeros en ingenio, estrategia y encanto como mentor del tributo que le sea...

Empecemos con que es la historia de Coriolanus Snow, el presidente Snow odiado por muchos y tolerado sólo por algunos, de cierto modo pasa de ser villano o al menos acá es protagonista, y en las primeras páginas yo me repetía a mi misma no puedes tomarle cariño él es malo, pero me falle, porque si le tome aprecio y en su historia familiar entendí un poco porque tenía esa peculiar forma de ser. Es un adolescente, huérfano de madre y padre, esto último a causa de la guerra contra los distritos y con una situación económica difícil, buscando aparentar que la familia Snow aún tiene poder y dinero; además quiere estudiar en la universidad lo cual es pago y en su situación actual esta dificil, por no decir imposible, su apoyo es Tigris su prima una genio de la moda para mi que trabaja como obrera y ha sido en parte la protectora de el, pero aun así su sueldo alcanza para poco.

Y tiene una oportunidad va a ser mentor en los onceavos juegos del hambre, tiene la esperanza de que su tributo gane o haga un buen papel y eso lo ayude a conseguir una beca, aunque no han especificado cuál sería el premio para el mentor del ganador. Y aqui es donde comienza mi empatía con snow, claramente es un mentiroso y manipulador se ve en los primeros capítulos aparenta ser de dinero y finge que algunos le agradan como Sejanus aunque en realidad le desagrada bastante porque tiene una posición privilegiada; pero es alguien con un sueño el de estudiar y sacar adelante a su familia y eso me identifica el soñar y luchar por algo. También cuando habla de la situación con la comida en su casa y como aprovechaba la comida gratuita del instituto conecte totalmente con esos años oscuros en mi país donde conseguir comida era todo un reto.

Entonces yo allí no estaba viendo a ese malvado presidente de los 75 años si no a un joven que tiene un sueño, una motivación y carencias materiales. Cabe decir que, coriolanusmuestra mucha inteligencia y astucia para elaborar planes, al enterarse que su tributo era del distrito 12 y quedar 🤡porque este distrito es de los más pobre, se le ocurre que puede ir a recibirla cuando llegue al capitolio.

Y aquí aparece mi querida Lucy Gray, irreverente desde su primera aparición al ser “elegida” colocó comillas porque se supone que fue algo a propósito del alcalde porque su hija Mayfair Lipp se lo pidió, le lanzó a esta una serpiente y canto una gran canción haciendo una reverencia final. Lucy era miembro de un grupo de artistas “La bandada” que tras la guerra quedaron atrapados en el distrito 12. Ese show, hizo que snow tuviese algo de fé ella, particularmente a mi me pareció que lucy se tomó con humor su elección, no se achicó aprovechó su momento y demostró su talento, en plan no le voy a dar el gusto a nadie.

¿y recuerdan el plan de Coriolanus? le funcionó en parte y en parte no, logró ganarse la confianza de lucy pero también se metió en un problema, que de esto les hablaré más adelante. Entonces Lucy lo conoce y comienzan a interactuar, ella aprovecha las cámaras y logra ganar atención y comida por parte del capitolio, Coriolanuss bajo la excusa de “querer ganar los juegos” comienza a visitarla seguido a conversar y contarles cosa de sí mismo, y allí es cuando segun yo, se enamoran; aunque él no era consciente de eso o bueno no quería admitirlo ellos en pocos dias quizás una semana estaban enganchados, claro paralelo a esto ocurrieron ciertos incidentes con la arena, murieron algunos tributos y mentores, y los juegos empezaron con solo 13 tributos cuando eran 24.

Quisiera rescatar que Coriolanus conoció los celos cuando lucy le cantó una canción en la primera edición de las entrevistas a un ex novio, ese hombre se quería morir y allí fue que se dio cuenta, como un dia antes que comenzaran los juegos y las probabilidades de Lucy de vivir se disminuyeran. Entonces aquí tenemos a los primeros trágicos amantes del distrito 12, y un amor que era imposible porque eran de mundos distintos y en este caso no se el poder mágico del amor de libros no iba a ser suficiente.

Recuerdan que les dije que el plan de Coriolanus para recibir a Lucy le generó un problema pues el decano Casca Highbottom lo regaño y le hizo una amonestación, cabe decir que este hombre lo odiaba aparentemente sin motivo y ya le había insinuado varias veces que sabia de su mentira lo que a snow le molestaba y lo incomodaba. por contraparte la Dra Gaul vigilante en jefe de los juegos lo amaba, tal vez porque tenían ideas igual de retorcidas, por un trabajo que snow presentó es que se comienza con la idea de mandarle regalos a los tributos en la arena.

De los juegos como tal no haré mucho hincapié fueron sangrientos pero en menor medida y por la falta de tecnología de ese entonces además por el atentado pasado, no se podía saber mucho de los tributos que estaban escondidos. Coriolanus por culpa de Sejanus quien para todos era su amigo hasta tuvo que entrar a la arena y salió casi ileso; entre unas artimañas de Coriolanus y la inteligencia de Lucy gray ella logra ser la vencedora no obstante, para snow las cosas no salieron tan bien.

El decano que lo odiaba descubrió las trampas que hizo por lo que fue expulsado de la academia y no iba a tener acceso a ningún premio, la única opción que le dieron fuero alistarse como agente de la paz, que es como la policía de este mundo, y él sin opciones accede. Aquí vi como Coriolanus lo había conseguido osea su objetivo inicial estuvo en sus manos y se le esfumó, tuvo muy poca suerte de su lado, porque que identificaran su pañuelo el que tenía el olor de lucy gray en las serpientes mutos por lo que en la arena a ella no la atacaron, cuando este había sido hecho pedazos por la misma es como mi expresión del salado no tiene dia libre.

Aunque claro si no lo descubrían, pues allí terminaba el libro y era un final bueno en parte para el, seguía sin explicar cómo se convirtió en un presidente dictador. Entonces lo manda a alistarse como agente nada más y nada menos que al distrito 12, osea donde vivía lucy gray y existía la posibilidad de que se la encontrara (gritos de fan que cree en el amor), para mi aca este amor tiene más posibilidad, porque ya él no tenía una presión, el capitolio estaba lejos, pero bueno, a Coriolanus no le parecía tan buen cambio de planes como a mí e incluso consideró suicidarse hasta que llega nada más y nada menos que Sejanus.

Y para que entiendan Sejanus era su amienemigo, aunque vivía en el capitolio y su familia tenía dinero, había vivido previamente en el distrito 2 y siempre se identificó como un ciudadano del distrito, se reveló contra la Dra. Gaul por lo cruel de los juegos y su hazaña de entrar en la arena para hacer un ritual funerario a Marcus que era su tributo, y además fue su compañero de clases en el distrito 2, lo llevo a que con algunos sobornos de su padre terminara como agente de la paz.

Aunque Coriolanus decía que no era su amigo, hasta este punto habían compartido muchas cosas, entonces era lo más cercano que tenía. En ese periodo de tiempo todo iba relativamente tranquilo, hacían entrenamientos y Coriolanus logró ver cantar a Lucy Gray con la bandada, allí renació el amor o bueno no renació pero podía darse más libremente que en el capitolio; y hasta aqui todo iba bien, pero, Senjanus decidió que él no estaba hecho para ser agente de la paz por si en algún momento le tocaba matar a alguien así que junto al ex de lucy y otros ideó un plan para liberar a alguien de la prisión y huir al bosque.

Como Coriolanus para él era un hermano, le contó, sin percatarse que allí había un sinsajo en el cual snow grabo todo lo que sejanus dijo y lo mandó al capitolio (por que a todos los sinsajos lo mandaron al capitolio para un experimento) . En ese proceso de planificación de la huida Snow para defender a Lucy mato a Mayfair Lipp, y junto a sejanus huyeron a la base, las armas quedaron con aliados de sejanus pero al final no se sabe quién se quedó con las armas.

Obviamente la Dra Gaul, escucho el sinsajo mandó a ahorcar a Senanus y Coriolanus vivía con el miedo de que descubrieran que él había matado a Mayfair Lipp, como Lucy estaba siendo acosada por el alcalde quien creía que ella era la asesina, decidieron que iban a huir al bosque a empezar desde 0. Un día antes de eso a Snow le informa que quedó admitido en la escuela de oficiales y se iría al día siguiente al distrito 2.

Coriolanus y Lucy salieron al bosque, nadie sospechó de su huida fueron al lago que solian frecuentar y como cosa del destino (o de la autora), comenzó a llover y se refugiaron en una casita y justo alli estaban las armas, especificamente el arma con el que Snow mayo a la hija del alcalde, y por su mente de una vez paso devolverse e irse a la escuela de oficiales, desistir de huir con Lucy; ella como sabiendo sus intenciones sale de la casa y se esconde. Snow intenta buscarla y dispararle pero no logra dar con ella, como una serpiente lo muerde regresa al distrito 12 y se va.

Resulta que no iba hacia el distrito 2 si no hacia el capitolio, la Dra. Gaul lo consideraba su creación y por sus mentes retorcidas yo creo que si tenían cosas en común. Como cierre de Lucy Gray y de los 10mo juegos no se supo nada más, la familia de Sejanus adoptó a Coriolanus y a su familia; y resulta que el creador de los juegos del hambre fue el papá de Snow, por eso el decano lo odiaba tanto, osea las ideas las dio él como un juego una noche de copas y al dia siguiente el padre de snow presentó el trabajo a nombre de los dos a la dra Gaul, esto explica mucho que el decano no era tan apasionado por los juegos, a el le daba vergüenza, y allí vemos el inicio del snow que se convirtió en presidente pues envenena a Casca Highbottom como venganza.

Mi opinión como super fan es que es un libro que no sabía que necesitaba, pero que fue excelente como la autora va construyendo el mundo de panem y aspectos de los juegos que en la trilogía se presentan como obvios, aca nos cuenta como se fueron creando y quienes fueron sus autores. También sorprende ver a un capitolio que aunque con algunos avances en la modificación biológica (mutos) aun la parte tecnológica no se había desarrollado.

El narrador en tercera persona nos permite ver una narración objetiva, aspecto que fue criticado por varios en la trilogia donde la narración era dada por el personaje principal asi algunas coas pudieron ser bajo su percepción y no completamente como pasaron. Me encantó la forma de desarrollar los personajes, como decía arriba presenta a un Coriolanus con muchos factores de riesgos y con un sueño, volver a levantar el apellido Snow, pero a pesar de eso nos enseña las grietas y a los fanaticos nos justifica como se convirtió en la persona que vemos en los libros.

Y para los amantes de la trilogia o para aquellos que tienen planes de leerla veran ciertas similitudes entre el personaje de katniss y el de Lucy, bueno iniciemos porque ambas viven en el distrito 12 y tienen unos tragicos amores, pero sobre todo es que ambas cantan, y ustedes diran cantar no es gran cosa, pero fijense las canciones que cantaba Lucy por lo general las componía ella, ahora las que cantaba katniss se presumen venian de la bandada porque luego de el incidente de lucy, se prohibio la musica en el distrito 12.

Pero hay una canción que compuso Lucy Gray y que Katniss canto, llamada el “árbol del ahorcado”, que contaba la historia de un hombre que fue asesinado, un rebelde e invita a su amada a unirse a el en el mas alla, les dejare un trozo de la canción:

Esta canción la escucho y la conocia Coriolanus y me imagino como se sintió o lo que penso cuando escucho a Katnis cantandola, muchos años despues. Sin duda este libro más alla del amor tambien es una critica a los sistemas de gobierno donde se prioriza a unos pocos a los poderosos y se condena a aquellos que no tienen altos status, como los hilos del poder van de la mano de la traición y que en ocasiones hacer lo correcto es trazarse un camino directo a la muerte.

The events of all the books are set in the future, a post-apocalyptic world, in which where the United States used to be, a new country called Panem has emerged, which is made up of its capital called the capitol and 13 districts that would be like its states or cities, each one of them is in charge of a specific area, for example, the 12th of coal, the 4th of fishing and so on; with the particularity that the most benefited were those who lived in the capitol while the citizens of the districts had a life of restrictions.

Thus, a rebellion began, led by the 13th district in charge of nuclear weapons, that war generated strong havoc in all parts of the country and finally, the 13th district was defeated and with it, all the districts. So in the capitol the hunger games are created as a way to remember that the capitol is superior. Now, basically the hunger games consist of choosing two people from each district, female and male, and sending them to the capitol to kill each other, winning the last survivor, and yes it sounds bloody and not so appetizing to read, but beyond that there is a whole story.

Next I will share with you the synopsis of the book and then my review with opinions, spoilers and fangirl moments, understand that this trilogy was finished, it was a closed cycle and then comes Suzanne and gives us this jewel that has made all the fans of her books come back, like "but I came back, I don't understand if I never left" (reference to a tiktok trend).

The once influential House of Snow is going through difficult times, and its fate depends on Coriolanus' ability to surpass his peers in wit, strategy and charm as a mentor to the tribute who will be...

Let's start with the story of Coriolanus Snow, President Snow hated by many and tolerated only by some, in a way he is not a villain or at least here he is the protagonist, and in the first pages I repeated to myself you can't be fond of him, he is bad, but I failed, because I did appreciate him and in his family history I understood a little why he had that peculiar way of being. He is a teenager, orphan of mother and father, the latter because of the war against the districts and with a difficult economic situation, seeking to pretend that the Snow family still has power and money; he also wants to study at the university which is paid and in his current situation is difficult, if not impossible, his support is Tigris his cousin a fashion genius for me who works as a worker and has been partly the protector of him, but still his salary is enough for little.

And he has a chance he is going to be a mentor in the 11th hunger games, he is hoping that his tribute will win or do well and that will help him get a scholarship, although they haven't specified what the prize would be for the winner's mentor. And here is where my empathy with snow begins, clearly he is a liar and manipulator, in the first chapters he appears to be of money and pretends that he likes some people like Sejanus although in reality he dislikes him a lot because he has a privileged position; but he is someone with a dream to study and help his family and that identifies me to dream and fight for something. Also when he talks about the food situation at home and how he took advantage of the free food at the institute I totally connect with those dark years in my country where getting food was a challenge.

So I was not seeing there that evil president of 75 years but a young man who has a dream, a motivation and material deficiencies. It must be said that, coriolanusshows a lot of intelligence and cunning to elaborate plans, when he found out that his tribute was from district 12 and being 🤡because this district is one of the poorest, it occurs to him that he can go to receive her when she arrives at the capitol.

And here appears my dear Lucy Gray, irreverent since her first appearance to be "elected" put quotation marks because it was supposed to be something on purpose of the mayor because his daughter Mayfair Lipp asked her, she threw a snake to this one and sang a great song making a final bow. Lucy was a member of a group of artists "The Flock" who after the war were trapped in the 12th district. That show, made snow have some faith in her, particularly to me it seemed that lucy took her election with humor, she didn't shrink, she took advantage of her moment and showed her talent, like I'm not going to give anyone the pleasure.

And do you remember Coriolanus' plan? it worked partly and partly not, he managed to gain Lucy's trust but he also got into trouble, which I will talk about later. Then Lucy meets him and they begin to interact, she takes advantage of the cameras and manages to gain attention and food from the capitol, Coriolanuss under the excuse of "wanting to win the games" begins to visit her often to talk and tell them things about himself, and that's when according to me, they fall in love; although he was not aware of that or well did not want to admit it they in a few days maybe a week were hooked, of course parallel to this occurred certain incidents with the arena, some tributes and mentors died, and the games began with only 13 tributes when there were 24.

I would like to rescue that Coriolanus met jealousy when Lucy sang a song in the first edition of the interviews to an ex-boyfriend, that man wanted to die and that's when he realized it, like a day before the games started and Lucy's chances of living were diminished. So here we have the first tragic lovers of District 12, and a love that was impossible because they were from different worlds and in this case I don't know the magical power of book love wasn't going to be enough.

Remember I told you that the plan of Coriolanus to receive Lucy generated a problem for him because the dean Casca Highbottom scolded him and gave him a reprimand, it should be said that this man hated him apparently for no reason and had already hinted several times that he knew about his lie, which bothered Snow and made him uncomfortable. On the other hand, Dr. Gaul, chief watcher of the games, loved him, maybe because they had the same twisted ideas, because of a job that Snow presented is that he started with the idea of sending gifts to the tributes in the arena.

Of the games as such I will not emphasize much, they were bloody but to a lesser extent and due to the lack of technology at that time and also because of the past attack, it was not possible to know much about the tributes who were hidden. Coriolanus because of Sejanus who for all was his friend even had to enter the arena and came out almost unscathed; between some tricks of Coriolanus and the intelligence of Lucy gray she manages to be the winner, however, for snow things did not go so well.

The dean who hated him discovered the cheating he did so he was expelled from the academy and would not have access to any award, the only option they gave him was to enlist as a peace officer, which is like the police of this world, and he agreed without options. Here I saw how Coriolanus had succeeded, that is, his initial objective was in his hands and he lost it, he had very little luck on his side, because they identified his handkerchief which had the smell of lucy gray in the snakes mutos so that in the arena she was not attacked, when it had been torn to pieces by the same is how my expression of the salty has no free day.

Although of course if they didn't find out, then that was the end of the book and it was a partly good ending for him, it still didn't explain how he became a dictator president. Then he sends him to enlist as an agent nothing more and nothing less than to the 12th district, that is where lucy gray lived and there was the possibility that he would meet her (shouts of a fan who believes in love), for me this love has more possibility, because he no longer had a pressure, the capitol was far away, but well, Coriolanus did not find it as good a change of plans as I did and even considered committing suicide until nothing more and nothing less than Sejanus arrives.

And just so you understand Sejanus was his frenemy, although he lived in the capitol and his family had money, he had previously lived in district 2 and always identified himself as a citizen of the district, he rebelled against Dr. Gaul for the cruelty of the games and his feat of entering the arena to perform a funeral ritual for Marcus who was his tribute, and was also his classmate in district 2, led him with some bribes from his father to end up as a peace officer.

Although Coriolanus said he was not his friend, up to this point they had shared many things, so he was the closest thing he had. In that period of time everything was relatively calm, they were training and Coriolanus managed to see Lucy Gray sing with the flock, there love was reborn or well it was not reborn but it could be given more freely than in the capitol; and until here everything was going well, but, Senjanus decided that he was not made to be a peace agent in case at some point he had to kill someone so together with Lucy's ex and others he devised a plan to free someone from prison and flee to the forest.

As Coriolanus was a brother to him, he told him, without realizing that there was a sinsajo in which snow recorded everything that sejanus said and sent it to the capitol (because all sinsajos were sent to the capitol for an experiment). In that process of planning the escape Snow to defend Lucy killed Mayfair Lipp, and together with sejanus fled to the base, the weapons were with allies of sejanus but in the end it is not known who stayed with the weapons.

Obviously Dr. Gaul, heard the sinsajo sent to hang Senanus and Coriolanus lived in fear that they would discover that he had killed Mayfair Lipp, as Lucy was being harassed by the mayor who believed that she was the murderer, they decided to flee to the forest to start from 0. A day before that Snow was informed that he was admitted to the school of officers and would go the next day to district 2.

Coriolanus and Lucy went out to the forest, nobody suspected of their escape they went to the lake that they used to frequent and as a thing of destiny (or of the author), it began to rain and they took refuge in a small house and right there were the weapons, specifically the weapon with which Snow May the daughter of the mayor, and for his mind at once went back and went to the school of officers, to desist to flee with Lucy; she as knowing his intentions leaves the house and hides. Snow tries to look for her and shoot her but can't find her, like a snake bites him he goes back to district 12 and leaves.

It turns out he wasn't going to district 2 but to the capitol, Dr. Gaul considered him her creation and from their twisted minds I believe they did have things in common. In closing Lucy Gray and the 10th games were never heard from again, Sejanus' family adopted Coriolanus and his family; and it turns out that the creator of the hunger games was Snow's father, that's why the dean hated him so much, I mean he gave the ideas as a game one night of drinks and the next day Snow's father presented the work on behalf of the two to Dr. Gaul, this explains a lot that the dean was not so passionate about the games, he was ashamed, and there we see the beginning of Snow who became president because he poisons Casca Highbottom as revenge.

My opinion as a super fan is that it is a book that I didn't know I needed, but it was excellent how the author builds the world of Panem and aspects of the games that in the trilogy are presented as obvious, here she tells us how they were created and who were their authors. It is also surprising to see a capitol that, although with some advances in biological modification (mutos), the technological part had not yet been developed.

And for lovers of the trilogy or for those who have plans to read it, you will see certain similarities between the character of Katniss and Lucy, well let's start because both live in District 12 and have some tragic loves, but above all is that both sing, and you will say that singing is not a big deal, but look at the songs that Lucy sang, she usually composed them, now those sung by Katniss are presumed to come from the flock because after the incident of Lucy, music was banned in District 12.
