What's Going On is the eleventh studio album by American soul singer Marvin Gaye, released on May 21, 1971 by Tamla (Motown Records). It was recorded between June and September 1970 and between March and May 1971. The album was produced by Marvin Gaye and was Gaye's first album to credit him as producer. What's Going On is a concept album with most of its songs segueing into the next song and is categorized as a song cycle. The songs in the album are told from the view of a Vietnam veteran who returns to his home country to witness hatred, suffering, and injustice.

The album was an instant commercial and critical success upon its release, selling nearly 2 million copies within a year, and has come to be viewed by music historians as a classic of 1970s soul. The album was generally well received by contemporary critics, and many critics, musicians, and many in the public consider What's Going On to be one of the greatest albums of all time and a landmark record in popular music. Additionally, in 1985, writers of the British music weekly the NME (New Musical Express) voted it the best album of all time. To evaluate the album overall, the album is a cyclical album, starting with "What's Going On" and ending with "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)" which loops back to 'What's Going On'. It is almost impossible to listen to or understand "What's Going On" without listening to all the tracks on the album because the album tells a story.
