European Parliament Approves Landmark Artificial Intelligence Act | Rising Star Giveaway - Reward 15000 Starbits (Ends 19 March UTC)

The European Parliament officially voted the landmark Artificial Intelligence (AI) Act on Wednesday. The Artificial Intelligence Law was endorsed by members of the European Parliament with 523 votes in favour, 46 against and 49 abstentions.

It's a roughly 90,000-word law that was introduced years ago, last introduced at the Conference on the Future of Europe in May 2022. The law attempt to address all manner of AI considerations. This very comprehensive law is applauded by many organizations, especially the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).

Meanwhile, the Artificial Intelligence law needs to receive a final lawyer-linguist check and sign-off from the European Council. It will then enter into force 20 days after its publication in the official journal of the European Union, and will become fully applicable 24 months later.

The AI act is quite comprehensive and I have reviewed the some proposals, but since I am not an expert or a lawyer, I will not go into detailed information on the law. However, if you want to read it, some proposals about artificial intelligence, here are the links;

It aims to protect fundamental rights, democracy, the rule of law and environmental sustainability from high-risk AI, while boosting innovation and establishing Europe as a leader in the field. The regulation establishes obligations for AI based on its potential risks and level of impact.

While the AI act generally protects copyright owners and the public, it imposes serious responsibilities on the providers of artificial intelligence models. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a statement in 2023 that his company could potentially exit the European Union due to artificial intelligence regulations. I am looking forward to seeing what developments will occur regarding the artificial intelligence act in the coming months.
