Streaming giant Spotify has released its annual Loud & Clear Report, providing an in-depth look at the music streaming economy. Spotify's royalty averages pay out roughly $0.003 per stream, and while it's received a lot of criticism for how it compensates artists, the report notes that it paid out record revenue to rights holders. • For another year, Spotify set the record for the highest annual payment to the music industry from any single retailer: $9B+
• The number of artists generating at least $1M, $100K and $10K, has nearly tripled since 2017
• Over half of the artists who generated at least $10K on Spotify are from countries where English is not the first language
• In 2023, Indies generated nearly $4.5B on Spotify. (Almost half of this total revenue)
• Many of the artists who generated at least $1M on Spotify in 2023 aren’t household names
• Spotify paid out nearly $4B to publishing rights holders – who represent songwriters – over the last two years.
• 10M+ uploaders had at least a single track
• ~8M had less than 10 tracks all time
• ~5M+ had less than 100 total streams across their full catalog
• Of the 23,400 artists who generated $10,000 in 2017, nearly half generated more than $50,000 in 2023
• In 2023, 50K artists generated at least $16.5K from Spotify
• Over 329,000 songs were streamed over a million times in 2023 alone.

Considering that Spotify's royalty averages pay out roughly $0.003 per stream, I'm honestly curious about how much Spotify earns. I think $0.003 is really too little. Also, 10 days ago I wrote about the Living Wage for Musicians Act being put to the US congress to ensure that streaming platforms pay a minimum of $0.01 per stream. If you want to take a look at the post, click here. If it becomes legal, the income of artists and musicians on streaming platforms will increase almost 3 times. I really think that artists and musicians should earn more per streaming.
