How Being Nocturnal Works For me

While some people prioritize sleep, some of us were not built to like sleep very much. Well, I can confidently say I am one of these people. I wouldn't say I don't like sleep, I just don't like sleeping for longer hours as some people do.

This is what has brought fought the debate of people who claim to be nocturnal humans. Nocturnal people are people who are active at night. They prefer the peace of the night, all quiet, with fewer people active on social media and less notifications to respond to. I’ve always referred to myself as someone who loves working late into the night. Don’t get me wrong when I say I love to work late Into the night.

Some people might refer to this as working till late in the night. Others might also say you prefer to work at night. This two scenarios are different in my books. Let me explain.

People who work late into the night are people who are busy day and night. This means their schedule doesn’t allow them to choose between working late at night and working late into the night. Then there are also nocturnal ones. Since I feel I am one I will use my experiences to explain.

First of all, I prefer working in the night because I talk a lot. It’s very difficult for me to be quiet when I have someone to talk to. It’s very difficult for me to stay quiet in the day time when there are things going on at day time. Remember that a lot of people are asleep at night time so the noise is always less.

I realized it was quite difficult to work at day time but I also realized that at night I couldn’t get much sleep. At night times I am very active so I decided to shift my schedules to that time. When I started it was not too difficult to adapt to it.


I prefer working late into the night because I get easily distracted at day time. Remember in the point above I said am someone who loves talking. Have you ever seen someone who loves talking but doesn’t get easily distracted ?lol. The two terms go hand in hand. So since I am a talkative, the day time doesn’t do me good either.

So when it comes to reading, preparing for an exams and working I will always choose working late in the night.


To me the key thing is how quiet and serene the place in question can be. If it’s quite with less people walking around I can make do with that for a short while.

One other challenge I face with working at day time is the internet connection; I know this might not be valuable for some people but to me it is. We have come to a time where by when the internet connection is not strong for even a minute we feel discouraged to work or continue what we were doing. Even for a blogger like me internet connectivity and how strong it is plays a very important role for me. When my network is bad I don’t feel inclined to use hive. When the network is good I feel very good using hive.

This has made me start using hive late in the night. Late in the nights a lot of people are asleep and if you notice that’s what the network is very good.


At first I didn’t need anything to keep me awake at night. I wanted to try coffee some time back but I realized I didn’t like the taste. lol. I don’t have a problem with staying up late but with the number of things I was doing at that particular time I decided to try energy drinks. They were working perfectly until I fell sick. I realized it was not a disease but it was because I was depriving myself of some sleep.

So now I don’t take anything to keep me awake late at night. I try my best and when am tired I rest for a while and continue when I wake up. Well, there is also a way I help myself get more productive.

I sometimes take 15 minutes sleep brakes to help me. It doesn’t sound like much and at first it’s difficult to maintain. 15 minutes is too small for anyone to rest right? But you can do it. Make sure to set an alarm that will wake you up , you can also choose to set a timer for 15 minutes and then you get to it.

Sometimes your body can’t take it anymore and you have to doze off. Above everything always remember to take some rest even if it’s for a short while. You need to remember that you can work only if you are healthy. Be consistent in the times you wake up and sleep and your body will be okay with it.
