Taking Your Source Of Food From The Source
Food food food. For what are we without food? At times I sit down and think hard about the essence of food in our lives. Yes, it might sound weird but I think it is a valid question in my opinion. Why do I have to nourish myself daily to stay alive?
Well, this should be a topic for another day. Let’s get to the real deal.
What are my food sources? Will I be wrong to say they cook and all I have to do is eat? lol. Enough of the jokes lol.
In the part of the country where I live currently, we don’t fancy the idea of having your source of food. This is due to a few factors which are mostly beyond our control.
First of all, in the northern part of Ghana, the only types of food we can farm are things that have to do with maize. Don’t get me wrong, other foods can be grown here but the probability of it turning out fine is low. Back in the Volta region, we had a huge farm where we farmed almost everything. From maize to plantain to cassava, to coco yam and a whole lot of stuff. We also had fruits on the farm.
The farm was not our major source of food but it played a big role in our food sources. This was because in that part of the Volta region the land was fertile hence it was cheaper and easier to farm just as a source of food. This brings me to my second point. Secondly, because of the type of land we have in this part of the country, it will be cheaper for you to buy from the market than trying to plant your source just to eat. If after investing a lot into making the garden work just using it as a source of food will end up hurting your pocket.
Regardless we do have a mini garden in and outside the house. That is not our mini garden but it belongs to my mom I should say. In this minimal garden, we have mainly plantain and banana. We have other plants like guava which is purely experimental and other relevant plants in the mini garden. Now we grow those types of plants because one it’s cheaper and two they don’t need a lot of attention and care before they grow. All they need is water often and you’re good to go.
So yh, in this part of the country we mostly deal with the finished product which is the processed part of the food but who wouldn’t like to farm his food? We would love to if that option is cheaper than buying the finished product from the market. How are things looking like for you in the part of the world where you are? Does your land allow you to plant a variety of foods? Or do you have to get the finished product from the market?
This is an entry to the mayinleo prompt. You can join by going through the announcement post here.
Thank you.

I live in Denmark, so any crop needing lots of heat & sun, is out of the question (if not within a warehouse) :D
But potatoes is fairly easily grown here
That is good to know 😃
That is good to know 😃
Oh that's nice. Potatoes grow down here pretty easily as well but things like apple and the rest will take a lot of time and patience and it might even end up not geminating.
Why will Apples not Geminate?
Well our climate is not very conducive for apple germination and for people who can they will require special tools and special equipment to do that.
Feels fascinating to hear about the agricultural landscape in the northern part of Ghana and the challenges it has for food sourcing. It seems like a very fertile land in the Volta region provided a significant advantage for farming diverse crops. I wonder, what motivates you every day to do gardening?
Well I used to be interested in Gardening when we were in the volta region cause it was easier back then.
In the north here it is hard so i've lost so much interest in it so I don't.
could you believe that I once planted an apple 🍎🍏? Thinking it can grow in our land? My brother got the seed and we experimented it, behold, it didn't germinate atall. In my part of the world, our lands can't grow all good but the little ot grows, we grow it on our own and buy the rest as processed food
Haha as for apple dierr I will never try to plant it in this part of the world oo. For apple you will need a lot to make it succeed as our climate is not cut out for that kind of fruit.
Over here, in Nigeria, people who own farmlands try their best to work on the lands as it seems a lot cheaper, considering the economic situation. The lands too, in most regions are fertile although each one may be selective of what crop thrives on it.
Oh that’s fine. But am sure they can only grow a select crops cause some crops won’t grow there right.
Yes, yes, not every crop grows in every land. Some are selective.
Like in the north, porato, onion, potato and a few other crops thrive well compared to other regions.
