Intro

Its been a while since I make xps builds. 3 days ago I take my father to hospital with chest pain( he has a heart condition ) After some examination the Doctor decided to transfer us to bigger hospital for angiography. One of his vein was blocked 98% , they got it open and he stayed ICU for 3 days. Because of the covid restriction we werent allowed to stay in the hospital. They took care of everything. I started this build while waiting news from the hospital. So this build keep me busy ^^ He is all good right now, he is home.

The inspiration

Recently my friend bought 4 pack version of the game Gauntler : Slayer Edition. I generally like to play mmorpgs , this is my first time playing a game like this. I must admit I really liked the art style of the game. Gameplay is nice too. I played a Wizard which is the hardest class I learned later. There are some dungeons in the game full of lava and rocks. I wanted to have something similar as a terrain piece for our D&D games.

The build

I did not plan anything when I start this, I just cut a piece of foam and start drawing a circle in the center. I did not have anything particular in my mind but I've been playing the game for a week. So dungeon scenes sticked in my mind. I had no idea how to make lava work but i knew I'll figure it out as I go.

My xps foam is 18mm thick , ideally I needed thicker foam to make the rocks more natural but I had to work with what I have. I couldn't find thicker material around where I live. They end up thinner then ideal but its okey I guess. It turned out better then I expected. I cut randomly around the edges with no particular pattern. After this I use hot glue to attach the pieces to the base. I use crumbled aluminum foil to texture the rocks. The cuts are pretty random to achieve more natural look.

Conclusion

I am planning to make a bridge in the wider section of the build. A bridge made out of broken pieces. And the other narrower opening there will be a staircase to a teleport gate. in Part 2 of this build i'll paint the whole piece with PVA Glue + Black paint mixture and spray paint. After that we'll figure out how to make the lava dripping down between the rocks .

See you next time

Very cool build! Do you use a hot wire cutter on the XPS? I don't work with XPS all that much because I don't have a hot wire cutter and can't get clean cuts on it. Your build looks very sharp and clean tho, you did an amazing job. I would love to see it all painted up. Glad your father is doing better, hope for a fast recovery. :)

Thanks man appreciate it. He is really better now ^^ I generally use the hotwire for smaller pieces. For this one I didnt use, all the pieces are random cuts and different sizes. I use box cutter to cut them. For this kind of build you dont need a hotwire table, a ruler and a sharp knife is enough.

I already painted the piece, i'll share it tomorrow in part 2 @yems ^^

I’m not a D&D dude, never have been... but damn this arena is undeniably bad ass! Awesome work on this. Reminds me of a pokemon gym or something bad ass like that.

hahaha the first guy who saw it on discord commented similar thing about pokemon ^^ I guess the circle thing in the middle kind of a pokeball. Part 2 will be the painted version, if its still a pokemon arena, there will be lava , fire and fear ^^
