CREATIVENONFICTION #30 || The Agreement.

avatar

Most times I think agreement should always be in written form and signed by both parties so that when one party renege, they must be made to stick with the agreement or forfeit something.

I remembered one time when I worked in a particular school where we teachers were meant to think we were being done a favor by working there.
I would just call the name of the school G. Academy

I became part of the staff of the school and as a qualified teacher, I was excited to impart meaningfully into the younger generation.

The salary was not much at all but the agreement I had with the school management was that I could take private classes (lessons) for those interested in my class.

I was told there was a fixed price that I can charge the parents interested in having their children in the private classes but I was never told I would remit a certain percentage to the school.

I was told to get separate teaching materials so that I won't use them to make extra cash. I complied with all these rules and I also made findings from other teachers like me and they affirmed that that is how it's being done.

After the end of school each day, I do submit the materials given to me to use during the normal school periods. Immediately after the bell goes for closing, I would proceed to submit the materials given to me before commencing the extra classes.

I adhered to all these and I started with the lessons. At first, I started with few students and when I combine my salary with what I got from the extra lessons, it was not enough to get by before the next payday, but I was managing and hoping to get more students.

My dilemma with school management started when I had more students than I used to. I was told I could take as many students whose parents are willing to have their wards partake in the extra lessons.

Since they know the amount I charge the parents, they calculated the amount per student and also added it to my salary and they "felt" it was too much. I was summoned by the management and I was told I am to remit a certain percentage of the money I got from the extra lessons which weren't part of our agreement from the start.

I reminded them that the reason I agreed to work with them with that meager pay in the first place was that I was told I could complement it with the money I get from the extra lessons and we never agreed there will be a limit to the number of students I could take for the classes. They told me it's a new rule. I asked other teachers if they do the same but they were as surprised as I was.

The next day, there was a general meeting with all the teachers and we were informed about the "new rule" where we were to remit 50% of the money we get from the extra class.

We said we can either COMPLY OR RESIGN. They believe they can get any teacher but they failed to know that not everyone is qualified to teach.

After much deliberation, we all agreed to pay if the percentage was reduced because, for some of the teachers, the 50% they want to collect is even more than our salary which makes us at a disadvantage if we agree to pay that certain percentage. In the end, they won't even need to pay us, we will be the ones still giving them the balance of our lesson money.

The other option is to resign which some of us did while few remained for reasons best known to them. They immediately replaced the teachers that resigned but it had a great effect on the students and in time, parents began to withdraw their children from the school.

I learned after some years that the school had closed down as they had used their greed to chase good and qualified teachers.

Thank you all for reading.

So sad they let greediness take the best of them, and the end was terrible as envisaged, they should have stick to the initial agreement.

Greedy people are never satisfied until they drive themselves into a bottomless pit.

Turns out you can't eat your cake and have it, as the management of the school found out later. You can't put your teachers in that kind of difficult situation and still hope for the school to continue to thrive. They paid a very steep price for their greed.

I do sincerely hope another better door of employment opened for you after your resignation. Good teachers like you deserve better.

Thanks for sharing your story, I learnt a great deal of lessons from it.

Yes I did get better opportunities after I resigned and the experience I got from them made me ask enough questions when interviewing for the new job. I guess they did help in a way because if I hadn't left, I wouldn't have gotten a much better offer.

Thank you for visiting 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Seriously, when it comes to making an agreement, it is a thing we need to look into very well before conclusion is been made

It's all very well what happened to the Management, because of some greedy people who went bankrupt and contributed to the closing of the school. Have a happy day.

In an agreement, the most important part is the word that is committed. Therefore, agreements cannot be modified happily. Those school principals wanted to take advantage of your particular job. It is very good that you did not allow it. Thank you for sharing this story, @rukkie. Appreciate the comments on the other stories as well.

I was screaming the word, "greed" long before you used it. From asking you to return the school material after each day, showed how selfish they were.

They truth is, some people don't want others to prosper. They wouldn't have had been a problem if you only had few students. The moment they knew that you were making substantial amount of money, they got jealous.

Such people can't survive in business, because in business, you must give, sometimes, even more than you take.
