School diaries: Hedgehogs

Art is one of my favorite lessons to teach! Mostly because it is creative, fun and helps children express themselves, improve their motor skills, imagination and taste. As I have four hours of Art weekly, I have plenty of time to get my hands dirty with all sorts of crafts. Autumn is our theme for September and October and for our first lesson we made hedgehogs!!

I had found them in a Facebook page I've been following for some time now, but unfortunately the cutouts were not for free. Therefore, I had to make them myself in order to give them to my little students. After an hour on Canva I managed to make my printable cutouts and I could not wait for the Art lesson to come!

My little second graders started by painting the leaves. Then, they had to cut them out along with the hedgehog figure that they folded in half. Since some of the kids had trouble handling their scissors, I had to help them. I cut out leaves and tried to help those little hands fold the hedgehogs the right way and make them stand on their feet.

Glue time was next! The leaves were glued on the little hedgehogs and we soon had a whole hedgehog family!!

Don't you just love them?! I find them adorable!!

They have found their place on our classroom bookcase and soon more autumn creatures will come to sit by them. By the end of October, we are going to build a whole autumn forest in our classroom...
