A New Stroll Through Ayacucho Square (Eng/Esp)

Ayacucho Square is one of the city’s most popular squares, not only because it is quite spacious but also because of its central location. It is an ideal place for recreation, which is why it is always bustling with activity: young people on skateboards, adults playing chess and dominoes, vendors selling handicrafts and fast food, as well as sweets and treats.
In this square stands the equestrian statue of the Grand Marshal of Ayacucho, Antonio Jose de Sucre. The statue is quite large and sits on a pedestal that makes it look even more imposing. Next to it is a small stage where official and cultural events are often held.
The Manzanares River forms one of its boundaries; from this part of the plaza, you can see Mariño Avenue and the mini-passenger terminal in downtown Cumana. The plaza also features a large fountain that in the past was illuminated by striking lights; the water gushing in a constant stream through the colors created a spectacular nighttime display. Although it is currently not in operation, it still attracts attention.
For decades, Ayacucho Square became the most popular spot on weekend afternoons and evenings because the city’s two best ice cream shops were located right across from it, so it was always bustling with people. Now, the heaviest foot traffic is in Ayacucho Park. It’s worth noting that the square and the park are separated by the Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho Museum, but they are essentially one and the same place.
The number of people passing through here is high because the plaza is a must-pass point to get to the city center if using public transportation; it also connects the center with Humboldt Street and the large Hiper Galerias shopping mall. Many trees have been planted here for years, providing a sense of freshness and tranquility.
The plaza offers a respite for those walking by, not only for the view of its green spaces but also for what it represents, as it was inaugurated in 1890. Thus, several generations of Cumana residents have passed through here and witnessed the passing of the years; in my case, the plaza has seen me walk here for four decades.

La plaza Ayacucho es una de más populares de la ciudad, no solo porque es bastante amplia sino también por su ubicación céntrica. Es un lugar idóneo para la recreación, por tal razón siempre se observa mucho movimiento, jóvenes en sus patinetas, adultos jugando ajedrez y dominó, ventas de artesanías y de comida rápida, además de dulces y golosinas.
En esta plaza se encuentra la estatua a caballo del Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho, Antonio José de Sucre, misma que posee un tamaño considerable y se encuentra en un pedestal que la hace lucir más imponente. Al lado está una pequeña tarima, donde se suelen realizar actos oficiales y culturales.
El río Manzanares constituye una de sus fronteras, desde esta parte de la plaza se puede observar la avenida Mariño y el miniterminal de pasajeros del centro de Cumaná. En la plaza también se destaca una gran fuente de agua que en épocas pasadas funcionaba con luces muy llamativas, el agua brotando en un flujo constante a través de los colores era un gran espectáculo nocturno. Actualmente no está en funcionamiento, pero de igual manera atrae las miradas.
Durante décadas la plaza Ayacucho llegó a ser el lugar más visitado durante las tardes y noches de los fines de semana porque al frente estaban las dos mejores heladerías de la ciudad, así que le concurrencia era alta. Ahora el mayor movimiento se presenta en el Parque Ayacucho, es de hacer notar que la plaza y el parque están divididos por el Museo Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho, pero prácticamente es un mismo lugar.
La cantidad de personas que transitan por acá es elevada porque la plaza es un paso obligado para ir al centro de la ciudad si se utiliza transporte público, además comunica al centro con la calle Humboldt y el gran centro comercial Hiper Galerías. Acá están sembrados muchos árboles, desde hace muchos años, que conceden sensación de frescura y tranquilidad.
La plaza ofrece una pausa para quien viene caminando, no solamente para la vista por sus áreas verdes sino también por lo que representa ya que fue inaugurada en 1890, así que varias generaciones de cumaneses han pasado por acá y han sido testigos del paso de los años, en mi caso, la plaza me ha visto caminar por acá en cuatro décadas.
