Everything changes over time. A few years ago, across from Ayacucho Park in Cumaná, there were two very popular businesses, but for various reasons, they were closed. On the corner was the Bariloche ice cream shop, considered the best in the city for nearly three decades, and next door was La Popa del Zamora, a brewery and equestrian center that was very popular because it was the only place downtown where you could watch horse races on the weekends.
But both businesses went bankrupt, and after closing their doors, they began to fall into disrepair—to the point of posing a danger to passersby because the masonry was crumbling at any moment. For this reason, the entire area was declared a hazard zone. Later, the municipality reclaimed the land and erected a large colonial-style facade. This structure is an empty shell and was built after demolishing the dilapidated buildings of the aforementioned establishments, leaving behind an era that will never return.
From here, you can see the bell tower of the cathedral—a beautiful view that has inspired great artists. At first, it was thought that the new structure would be a modern shopping center, but that wasn’t the case. Still, the restoration of this space—for the safety of the people and the city’s aesthetics—is certainly welcome.
The plaza is always bustling with people at all hours, seeking a break and respite from the relentless Cumaná sun. Many trees provide shade for visitors; they’re over four meters tall. Unfortunately, about two months ago, a terrible accident occurred: a large branch broke off and killed a woman who was sitting in the park, prompting intensive pruning efforts in all public spaces.

Con el tiempo todo cambia. Hace algunos años atrás, frente al parque Ayacucho de Cumaná, se ubicaban dos locales comerciales muy populares pero por diversos motivos fueron cerrados. En la esquina estaba la heladería Bariloche, considerada la mejor de la ciudad durante casi tres décadas, y al lado existía La Popa del Zamora, una cervecería y centro hípico muy concurrido por ser el único lugar en el centro donde se podían observar las carreras de caballos durante el fin de semana.
Pero ambos negocios quebraron y tras cerrar sus puertas comenzaron a deteriorarse, hasta el punto de representar un peligro para los transeúntes porque la mampostería se derrumbaba a cada instante, razón por la cual toda esa zona fue declarada zona de peligro. Posteriormente la municipalidad reclamó esos terrenos y levantó una gran fachada de estilo colonial, esta estructura es un cascarón vacío y se realizó tras demoler las construcciones ruinosas de los locales mencionados, dejando atrás una época que no regresará.
Desde acá se logra observar el campanario de la iglesia Catedral, una buena vista que inspira a grandes artistas. En principio se creyó que la nueva estructura sería un moderno centro comercial, pero no fue así. Pero sin duda se agradece la recuperación del espacio para la seguridad de las personas y la estética de la ciudad.
En la plaza siempre hay personas a todas horas, buscando distraerse y descansar del implacable sol cumanés. Muchos árboles regalan sombra a los visitantes, se puede decir que miden más de cuatro metros de altura. Lamentablemente hace dos meses atrás aproximadamente, ocurrió un terrible accidente, una gran rama se desprendió y mató a una señora que estaba sentada en el parque, lo que propició intensas jornadas de poda en todos los espacios públicos.
