A Tour of Bermudez Square (Eng/Esp)

Today’s tour takes us through Square Jose Francisco Bermudez, named in honor of the illustrious national hero from eastern Venezuela. It is an iconic square in the city center, as the civil courthouse is located nearby and the surrounding area is home to businesses specializing in residential and commercial refrigeration.
In addition to the historic basketball court next to the plaza, the most striking feature is the large statue of Bermudez. It is now somewhat weathered and missing its right hand. A plaque reads: “Commander-in-Chief Jose Francisco Bermudez (1782–1831). He played an important role in our country’s War of Independence, liberating Caracas and Cumana (1821).”
The court was renovated last year for the benefit of the community and the young people who come from other parishes and states in the east to train and play here; it has hosted regional and national tournaments. Renowned national team basketball players Gabriel Estaba and Luis Jimenez played on this very court when they represented the state of Sucre.
There is a National Police station inside the sports field, so both the field and the plaza are secured around the clock. Officers remain on duty to protect the field’s facilities from vandalism, as a considerable investment was made to get it up and running.
This plaza is quite spacious and very comfortable, which is why many people come here to relax and take a break from their daily routine. There are benches scattered throughout the area, shaded by trees. It’s a very pleasant space where children can play freely without any risk.
The site looks well-maintained, and its gardens feature modern designs; in fact, it looks different from the last time I visited. It’s always a pleasure to explore the city’s public spaces.

El recorrido de hoy nos lleva por la Plaza José Francisco Bermúdez, nombrada en honor al ilustre prócer del oriente venezolano, un espacio que es referencia en el centro de la ciudad porque cerca está el edificio de los tribunales civiles y en sus alrededores se encuentran negocios comerciales dedicados al área de la refrigeración doméstica y comercial.
Además de la histórica cancha de baloncesto ubicada a un lado de la plaza, lo más llamativo es la estatua de gran tamaño de Bermúdez. Ahora luce un poco deteriorada y le falta la mano derecha. Se puede apreciar la placa que dice: "General en Jefe José Francisco Bermúdez (1782 - 1831). Tomó parte importante en la guerra de independencia de nuestro país, libertando a Caracas y Cumaná (1821)".
La cancha fue reacondicionada el año pasado para beneficio de la comunidad y de los jóvenes que vienen de otras parroquias y estados del oriente a practicar y jugar en este espacio que ha sido escenario de torneos regionales y nacionales. En esta misma cancha jugaron los reconocidos basketeros de la selección nacional Gabriel Estaba y Luis Jiménez cuando defendían al estado Sucre.
Dentro de la cancha está un módulo de la policía nacional, así que tanto la cancha como la plaza cuentan con seguridad a toda hora. Los agentes permanecen custodiando las instalaciones de la cancha para que no sean vandalizadas ya que se realizó una inversión considerable para que esté operativa.
Esta plaza es bastante amplia y muy cómoda, de allí que diferentes personas la frecuenten para descansar y hacer una pausa en la rutina. Hay diferentes bancos dispuestos por todo el lugar, arropados bajo la sombra de algunos árboles. Este espacio es muy agradable, acá los niños pueden jugar libremente sin correr ningún riesgo.
Este sitio luce bien cuidado y sus jardines tienen diseños modernos, de hecho se ve distinta desde la última vez que la visité. Siempre es satisfactorio recorrer los espacios públicos de la ciudad.
