A Tour of Vargas Square (Eng/Esp)

Walking along the banks of the Manzanares River toward the Gomez Rubio Bridge, I came upon Jose Maria Vargas Square, named after a distinguished Venezuelan who went down in history as the first civilian to serve as president of Venezuela, at a time when the military was vying for power. This square features several massive trees, so large that their roots have lifted the concrete pavement.
From here, you can see the river from a more peaceful vantage point than the one offered by the city center. The square used to have a bust of Dr. Vargas, but it was vandalized, leaving only the pedestal. From this spot, you can head in several directions: in addition to the city center, you can go to Gomez Rubio Avenue, on the way to the barracks, as well as toward the Historic District and the road to Cantarrana.
In this small square, I realize what historical figures mean to the places that were founded in their honor. For us here in Cumana, Jose Maria Vargas doesn’t hold as much significance as Antonio Jose of Sucre, but in the former Vargas state, the image and legacy of this distinguished physician are very important; Vargas Square is very large and is located near the governor’s office.
The name Jose Maria Vargas is also used to designate institutions—the largest and most important ones, such as the hospital, a high school, and the sports complex. There is also a Vargas Hospital in Caracas, which is one of the largest in the capital. In Sucre State, on the other hand, the memory of military figures and battles is honored more, pushing into the background the humanists who clearly contributed greatly to the consolidation of the Republic and the advancement of civilization.

Caminando por las riberas del río Manzanares, en dirección hacia el puente Gómez Rubio, me encontré con la plaza José María Vargas, insigne venezolano que pasó a la posteridad por ser el primer civil que ejerció la presidencia de Venezuela, en una época donde el militarismo pugnaba por el poder. Esta plaza posee algunos árboles de gran magnitud, tanto que las raíces han levantado el piso de concreto.
Desde acá se aprecia el río desde una perspectiva más tranquila con respecto a la que se tiene desde el centro de la ciudad. La plaza tenía un busto del doctor Vargas, pero fue vandalizado, dejando solamente el pedestal. Desde este lugar se pueden tomar varias direcciones, además del centro, se puede ir a la avenida Gómez Rubio, camino al cuartel, también hacia el Casco Histórico y la vía a Cantarrana.
En esta pequeña plaza caigo en cuenta de lo que representan las figuras históricas para aquellos lugares que fueron fundados en su nombre. Para nosotros acá en Cumaná, José María Vargas no posee tanto significado como Antonio José de Sucre, pero en el antiguo estado Vargas, la imagen y lo que representa el insigne médico es muy importante, la plaza Vargas es muy grande y está ubicada cerca de la gobernación.
La designación José María Vargas también identifica a instituciones, las más grandes e importantes, tales como el hospital, un liceo y el polideportivo. También en Caracas existe un hospital Vargas que es uno de los más grandes de la capital. Por su parte, en el estado Sucre se honra más la memoria de militares y batallas, dejando en segundo plano a los humanistas que a todas luces contribuyeron en gran medida a la consolidación de la República y al avance de la civilización.
