Beach Postcards in Quetepe (Eng/Esp)

English version

As I walked down the hill facing Quetepe Beach, I noticed that there was another interesting view of the community. I began walking back toward the beach, looking for new scenery along these paths that were previously unknown to me. This time, there were many boats anchored along the shore, a sign that several fishermen had already returned from their fishing trips.

Small boats rested near the shore—ideal for harvesting seafood, which is the main source of livelihood for this community. The people here clearly take pleasure in living in this environment; at least, their faces reflected the peace of those who live far removed from the daily grind of city life and its problems.

I’ve gone fishing on several occasions, but I’ve never boarded a boat to head out to sea at dawn. I suppose I’m far from having such an experience because I’m not a fisherman, and I admit that seafarers are already seasoned in this trade—since they’ve been trained from a very young age about the moon’s influence on the tides, fishing seasons, and what to do to avoid danger.

From this vantage point, I noticed some small huts—modest structures made of wood and palm fronds. Smiling families with children running back and forth, chasing chickens and looking for crabs—it’s amazing how happy one can be with so little, far removed from so many materialistic concerns. Returning to the essence of life must be one of the paths to embarking on a journey of inner rediscovery.

This seascape is dotted with coconut palms—a symbol of beach life—that tower over this coastal corner. Coconut water is often a highly sought-after drink during Holy Week, not only because it’s refreshing but also because it’s commonly mixed with whiskey during those days when revelry, celebration, and dancing until dawn on the beach are another tradition—especially among the younger crowd.
