Cinta Costera: My Walk Along the Metallic Butterfly (Eng/Esp)
English version
A rather striking structure located on Avenida Perimetral—which I photographed to share with you—is the sculpture of a huge butterfly situated next to the Hernán Marín Amphitheater. This artistic installation was designed according to the principles of kinetic art; as a result, as the viewer moves, they can appreciate different perspectives, which conveys a sense of dynamism.

Carlos Cruz Diez and Jesus Soto are the leading figures of kinetic art in Venezuela. Although both have passed away, their works represent the primary influences of this artistic movement, which seeks to capture the refraction of light. I stopped for a moment to admire this metallic butterfly, which looks captivating amid its display scaffolding.

Without a doubt, the structure looks impressive; the butterfly was created by intertwining various tubes that together form the outstretched wings. At its base is a large swing where visitors can sit to take photos, with the sky and the sea as a backdrop. In the same area, there are several concrete benches where visitors can watch cultural events or relax for a while, chatting amid the seascape.

Works of kinetic art were among my favorites because they symbolized modernity, and that was about 40 years ago, when I visited an exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Caracas and later had the chance to appreciate the works of Soto and Diez both in Caracas and in the renowned state of Vargas. So here we have the metal “Cumana butterfly,” another feature that’s part of the Cinta Costera—a space designed for family fun—in the area known as “The Monumento.”
