The Gomez Rubio Bridge is an iconic structure in the city of Cumaná, spanning the Manzanares River near Plaza Vargas. The bridge dates back to 1945 and was built to provide direct access to the Gran Mariscal Antonio José de Sucre Barracks—the city’s main military garrison, located on Arismendi Avenue—as well as to connect to the highway leading to Cumanacoa.
The bridge was named in honor of General Juan de Dios Gomez Rubio, a native of Cumana and an adversary of Juan Vicente Gómez. It was the second structure of its kind to span the Manzanares River; the first was the Guzmán Blanco Bridge. Today, it serves as a link connecting Pedro Luis Aristigueta Avenue, Andrés Eloy Blanco Avenue, and Gomez Rubio Avenue itself. From the top, there is a beautiful view of the river, including the lush apamate trees that have stood on the riverbank for years.
When construction of this bridge began, the ground movements significantly affected the former Convent of San Francisco, located just a few meters from here, which accelerated the destruction of its internal structure, which had been built during the colonial era. The bridge was inaugurated during the administration of Isaías Medina Angarita and featured a large bronze plaque that was removed during its renovation in 2012—when it was widened to two lanes in each direction—and was never reinstalled.
A stone wall separates the walkway from the river’s spillway; it is accessed via various staircases arranged along the path between the two bridges. Years ago, it was common to see young people jumping off the bridge into the river—a practice that continued for quite some time until recently, when a teenager died after jumping from the top of a tree at the spillway in Puerto La Madera. Since then, authorities have banned the practice of jumping off the bridges.
