New Murals on Aristigueta Avenue (Eng/Esp)

I walked through the downtown area of Cumana known as The Tamarindo (named after the 400-year-old tree there), and my gaze was drawn to two recently painted murals. The first honors Jorge Antonio Montes, known as Cundo “El enano del tamarindo” (Cundo “The Tamarind Dwarf”), who was very popular during his lifetime for selling newspapers in this spot. The mural is very colorful and covers an entire wall; the artwork was created by the Guaraguara en pinta group and the Muralistas Foundation.
For years, Cundo set up shop at The Tamarindo, where he sold newspapers, magazines, and hot coffee starting at dawn. Then, by mid-morning, he would head to the market with the merchandise he hadn’t sold earlier. According to him, the “peak time” for selling newspapers was from 6 to 9 a.m. At that hour, people heading to work early would stop by Cundo’s stand to catch up on regional news. It was common to see a crowd gathered around the newspapers Region, Siglo 21, Ultimas Noticias, and Meridiano—back when the internet hadn’t yet become a part of our lives.
I continued down Aristigueta Avenue and came across another mural, created by the same artists. Here we can see the popular Pedro Lucas, the city’s reporter, who is well-known on social media because for more than a decade he has been reporting on events in the city as soon as they happen; he also provides a platform for complaints, announcements, and other public services for the community.
I took advantage of the walk to cross to the other side of the street and stroll in the shade of the trees that stand like guardians of the Manzanares River. It’s true that the waters look different—they’ve risen slightly and appear to be flowing more freely.

Recorri la zona céntrica de Cumaná conocida como El Tamarindo (debido al árbol cuatricentenario que está allí) y me hizo fijar la mirada en dos murales recientemente pintados. Durante años Cundo se instaló en el Tamarindo y allí vendía la prensa escrita, revistas y café caliente desde la madrugada para luego, a media mañana, acudir al mercado con la mercancía que no había vendido temprano. Según él, la "hora caliente" para vender periódicos era de 6 a 9 de la mañana, a esa hora la gente que iba a trabajar temprano se detenía en el punto de Cundo para enterarse de los sucesos regionales, era común observar el tumulto alrededor de los diarios Región, Siglo 21, Últimas Noticias y Meridiano, de cuando el internet aún no se había llegado a nuestras vidas.
Seguí mi camino por la Avenida Aristigueta y me encontré el otro mural, realizado por los mismos artistas. Acá podemos observar al popular Pedro Lucas, el reportero de la ciudad, muy conocido en redes sociales ya que durante más de una década viene informando sobre los sucesos que ocurren en la ciudad inmediatamente cuando se producen, además presta sus espacios para denuncias, notificaciones y otros servicios públicos para la comunidad.
Aproveché el viaje para cambiarme a la otra acera y caminar bajo la sombra de los árboles que reposan como guardianes del río Manzanares. Cierto es que las aguas lucen diferentes, han recuperado un poco su nivel y lucen más caudalosas.
