One of the most striking features of Andres Eloy Blanco’s Birthplace is its parral, a vine that practically envelops the upper part of the central courtyard and thus occupies a significant portion of the space. The vine grows along a wooden structure and greets visitors as soon as they enter. On the right is a large statue of the poet, depicted in a distinctive pose—holding his daughter and a book—very similar to the one seated at the entrance to the mansion.

The vine has been maintained for many years; its branches cover the entire wooden structure surrounding the courtyard and create such attractive greenery that it can be seen from Bolivar Square. The wooden framework isn’t very tall, and its design is quite simple, which allows the vine greater freedom to spread and spill over into areas where there are no restrictions; for this reason, you have to be very careful when walking.

The vineyard was immortalized in one of the poet’s poems, titled Grapes of the Season, written in 1923 in Madrid, where he was awarded a prize for his poem “Ode to Spain.” There, he received a prestigious honor from the monarchs of Spain and subsequently remained in Europe longer than planned.

In this poem, one senses a deep nostalgia for the end of the year and for being away from his family—especially his mother—and his traditions, such as the embrace among loved ones. He recalls with longing those 12 grapes accompanied by the 12 chimes of the clock, a Spanish custom that was adopted and popularized in Venezuela.

Without a doubt, the Andrés Eloy Blanco House exudes history, culture, literature, and a colonial spirit that still lingers in every room. Uno de los elementos más llamativos de la Casa Natal de Andrés Eloy Blanco es su parral, una vid en forma de enredadera que prácticamente envuelve la zona superior del patio central y, por lo tanto, ocupa un espacio importante de este lugar. La planta crece adosada a una estructura de madera y nos recibe justo al entrar. A mano derecha se encuentra una estatua de gran tamaño del poeta que luce una imagen distintiva, con su infanta y un libro en las manos, muy parecida a la que se muestra sentada en la entrada de la casona.

El parral se ha mantenido por muchos años, las enramadas cubren toda la estructura de madera dispuesta alrededor del patio y ofrece un verdor tan atractivo que se aprecia desde la plaza Bolívar. Un dato curioso es que la actual vid es descendiente de la planta que una vez estuvo cuando el poeta habitó esta casa. Tuve la oportunidad de ingresar al patio y se puede advertir que la enredadera está creciendo fuera de control. El armazón de madera no es muy alto, su diseño es bastante sencillo, lo que permite mayor libertad a la planta para extenderse y desbordarse hacia las zonas donde no existan limitaciones, por ello hay que tener mucho cuidado al caminar.

El parral fue inmortalizado en uno de los poemas del poeta, titulado Las uvas del tiempo, escrito en 1923 en Madrid, donde le fue otorgado un premio por su poema "Canto a España", allí recibió un célebre reconocimiento por parte de los reyes de la nación ibérica, permaneciendo luego en Europa más tiempo de lo planificado.

En este poema se nota una profunda nostalgia por el fin de año y estar en esa fecha alejado de su familia, sobre todo la madre, y sus costumbres como el abrazo entre seres queridos. Recuerda con añoranza esas 12 uvas acompañadas por las 12 campanadas, costumbre española que se adoptó y popularizó en Venezuela.

Sin duda, en la Casa de Andrés Eloy Blanco se respira historia, cultura, literatura y un espíritu colonial que aún pervive en cada habitación. Desde que se ingresa a esta casona nos transportamos a otra época, una donde el país transitaba por férreas dictaduras, heredadas de las guerras de emancipación, y en la cual los humanistas tendrían en el poder de la palabra, los ideales de libertad y el pensamiento, las armas para pasar a la posteridad.
