She lay down on the cold kitchen tiles. Her warm tears soaked the floor beneath her. Her whole body felt feverish.
Why didn't he want her anymore?
As she stared at the blue ceramic tiles, her mind seemed to shatter into pieces. Each fragment grew sharp and buried itself deeper into her heart. The emptiness he had left behind hurt so much.
She wrapped her arms around herself and listened to the sound of her own sobs echoing through the room. It felt as though she was incomplete now. No matter how she tried to arrange the scattered pieces of herself, the picture would never come together again.
She looked at their smiling faces in a photograph and wondered if she would ever smile like that again. In the picture she looked whole, content, alive. Now it felt as though her heart was bleeding.
She searched for herself inside her own thoughts.
Then the whistle of the kettle broke the silence.
It reminded her of her mother, who always kept different herbal teas and made them for her. With great effort, she got to her feet and prepared a cup for herself.
She thought about her mother. About her childhood. About the friends she hadn't spoken to in so long because her partner never liked them.
And then she remembered something important:
She had existed before him.
From the darkness, a forgotten part of her began to glow. It reached out and took her hand.
She washed her face, put on a song she loved, and began to dance across the cold kitchen tiles.
