Every Thursday, I rummage through my shelves of photographs. Often, I don’t quite know what to say or share; I simply let my mind wander as I gaze at those memories. Sometimes, it’s because people have moved abroad; other times, it’s because they have simply passed on. Yet, the moments remain—captured in fleeting seconds of imagery and color.

My nephews are still young in these pictures; they appear frequently throughout my photographic collection. I can’t quite place what the celebration was for. It looks like our home in La Fundación, and my aunts and uncles—including my mother’s brother, who is no longer with us—are present. My brother-in-law, Silverio, is there too, and tucked between them, one can just make out my cousin Felicia, who has also passed away. I hadn’t noticed this until I viewed the photograph on my computer, where it appears larger and with greater detail.

Pausing to look at those who are no longer with us is a special moment for me—a way of expressing gratitude for their lives and the affection they shared.

I am grateful for their presence and for the companionship they offered along our journey through this realm we call life.

My nephews—now grown men living in another country—remind me that life is a constant flow of change, the kind we sometimes don’t see coming.
