My Cousin Visit

For the past six months, my day has been on schedule. I woke up, brush my teeth, wash the dishes, and prepare breakfast ( oh I wish) in my house, I can't remember the last time we ate breakfast. Breakfast in my house is seen as a taboo, everyone frowns at it, I don't know if it's because of the low-income rate my father or something, I can't tell, I have asked several times, why we don't eat breakfast, but no one seems to know. so we grew up like that. Even when my father died, we continued running our daily activities without breakfast.

What we normally do in the morning, when we wake up, is, brush our teeth, take our bath and we are off. For the past twenty-third years of my life, I lived like this, more like I was programmed like this. On the 20th of December 2018, my cousin called that she would be coming to spend Christmas with us. really? I shouted, and Munachi, said yes. Munachi was my cousin's sister's name. A very beautiful, elegant and intelligent girl. Although we have not seen her, we always talked on the phone, via video calls and chats. She would always tell us about how boys do fight over her in her school in Lagos. How boys would stare at her until they jam another person or they hit something. We would all laugh about her experiences with guys.

Her beauty was the charm of young men. This made her famous in school. She once told us, how two brothers fought each other in school because of her. She said, the elder brother asked her out but she refused, and unknowing to her, the younger brother asked her out and she agreed, to her greatest surprise when she was out with this guy, his senior brother
showed up from nowhere and started beating his junior brother, calling him names, he called him betrayer, he asked the junior brother, how could you go out with a girl that turned me down? Before I could say jack, they started throwing punches, Muna said while laughing.

This and many more stories she told us, made us want to see her more. So as we spoke on the phone, she would tell us about her neighbour who has been sick for a while now. When I asked her about her neighbour, she took a long pause, sighed and started to cry. One thing about muna is that she is very emotional, as she was crying, she said he is dead, in v very faint voice. Ah! I shouted! How manage? What happened? I thought he was getting better. How come? Muna couldn't say a word. We were silent for about a minute on the phone, before she said, sometimes I don't understand why good people die and the bad ones live. I don't understand why good people die young and bad people live long, I don't understand why. Sometimes I wonder if God cared about good people. Before she could say more, I said shiii, don't speak further. Only God knows why things happen the way they do. Maybe when we get to heaven we will ask him. For now, I do not know why things happen the way they do but one thing I know is that is better to be good and die young than to be bad and live long. Let's not ask God questions we will not be happy later on if we did. For now, let's enjoy life and live life. She breathed out heavily. And said thanks.

So when exactly are you coming back? I asked. She said mmmm, guess, I said what? She said guess, I said I'm not good at guessing, just tell me, she said she is not telling me until I guess, then next week, she said nope, I'm coming back tomoooooroooow. She stressed tomorrow with so much excitement and joy. I screamed yeeee !! My younger sister has to rush into my room, to know what was happening, she asked what's wrong brother, why did you shout like that? with an excited face, I turned and said, Muna is coming back tomorrow. Ah! She shouted, it's a lie, I gave her the phone, and said hear for yourself.

Hello, muna, hello sis, muna replied, is it true you are coming back tomorrow? My junior sister asked. Yes baby girl I am, muna responded, my sis, threw my phone on the bed and ran off screaming with joy and happiness in her voice. I picked up the phone, told muna, this better not be a joke, she said no, it's not, that she is taking 8 am flight to Anambra state tomorrow. I was so happy to hear that. So I told her if that's the case, that she should allow me to go and prepare for the coming of her majestic. She laughed and hung up the phone.

Before I could drop the phone, my junior sister was already in the guest room, getting it ready, she changed the bed sheet, the pillow case and the cottons, and she perfumed the room. Throughout the day it was a new level of happiness in our house. It was as if the president was visiting us. On the day of her visit, around 8 am, she called that she is about to board a flight. That she would be in Anambra state 9 am. So I and siblings went to the airport to wait for her. At the sight of her at the airport, I can't explain the type of joy and excitement I felt in me. I ran like a crazy man to her, carried her up and turned her around three times, both she and I fell on the floor, the people at the airport were looking at wondering what is happening.

At that point, I don't care what anybody thinks, I was so happy seeing my sister, whom I have seen since she was born. It was a moment for me, a moment I won't forget even after death. As we lay on the floor at the airport, we locked eyes smiling at each other, before I knew it, tears dropped from my eyes, I don't know why, I guess it was tears of joy. Inside me was bubbling, as we locked eyes for a while, we started laughing like crazy fools. My siblings joined us and started laughing.

All eyes were on us at that moment, we laughed and laughed and laughed. It took the security guard to take us out because we were just down there laughing. Now, when I remember that day, I will just be smiling.

So we left the airport and drove straight to a restaurant because we know we don't have food at home. And we can't impose our lifestyle on her. After she ate, we took her home, she dropped her stuff. We took her for a little walk around the neighbourhood, and she met some of our friends, one of my sister's friend called James, has always felt a thing for a cousin sister, even though they have not met in person, but they have been in what we can call distant friendship because they are not dating yet but they are close.

So we took her to James' house, but unfortunately for us, James wasn't home. He wasn't aware that she will be visiting, she wanted to surprise him but her plan didn't work out as she planned. So from there, we went to the football pitch where our community boys were playing other community boys in a semi-final match. At the end of the match, our community boys won 5 goals to 3 for the neighbouring community.

After the match, we went home, the whole day was fun fun fun fun fun I have never had a day like that till now, especially that moment we laughed and cried on the floor of the airport, that was heavenly for me.
