Shifting my Goal to Homeschooling During the Covid-19 Lockdown in Nigeria

It's actually my first post on the Home Edders community, I count it as a privilege to be here. It's been a good day for me and I know the day is also good for you. I just want to share my passion on how I started a homeschool in my neighborhood. Nigeria where I'm from, the year 2020 came with great expectations for everyone most especially myself. I had already made my new resolutions and set my expected goals for the year ahead. Suddenly, the Covid-19 pandemic struck the world. Mind you homeschool wasn't part of my plans for last year. The last time I did homeschool was some six years ago when my siblings were still tender. The lockdown started in February and became severe in March when all educational institution were asked to shot down by the Federal Government of Nigeria. The closure of schools and other public and private institutions led to the shifting of my focus to homeschooling in my neighborhood. It's your friend @salvictoria22 saying hi all the way from Nigeria.

Starting a Homeschooling Project and What Triggered it
Staying in the ghetto is a very difficult task because you'll see different kinds of people and different attitudes that'll be so irritating. During school hours the environment is usually calm because children have left to their different schools. That's the time sleep and read my books during my lunch leisure time. My business is usually between the early hours of the morning and evening period when people are back from work. I'm actually doing some little business in my store. One of my goal was to return to school that February before Nigeria experienced her first Covid-19 case, which latter spread all over the country. The pronouncement of total lockdown on schools cut my heart because there's no more rest during the afternoon or lunch time. The children in my area will continuously increase the noise pollution in the area. Suddenly an idea came into my mind. The idea was to gather the children and start a homeschool for them at least for two hours everyday Monday to Friday. The idea to do this Monday to Friday was because during the weekend most children will help their parents to do bigger house chores. This is how we started.

The Number of Children that Enrolled
At first i had just 3 children that agreed to come. Most of the children were interested in moving from one place to the other playing incessantly. As the lockdown got severe in April most parents brought their children since the homeschool was free. They continued coming but I placed an embargo on the number so as to effectively get the attention of the children and still achieve our goal of teaching them and reducing noise pollution in the environment. I accepted 20 due to small space to accommodate them.

The Joy that Comes from Teaching in our Homeschool
At first it was a bit strange and boring to organize these set of children together but as time went on it became more interesting to engage. I spotted out the quick learner and the slow learner's and divided the class into two respectively. This helped me to create more time for the slow learner's. Although not in my initial plan, but I enjoyed every bit of it.

Finally, joy and fulfilment are not streamlined to one area of Life, just look around you'll find joy and fulfilment by doing exceptional things. Like in my case the Joy that I have overwhelms my imagination. It feels good to be in #homeedders. See you in my next post, thanks for stopping by.
