FEMICIDE: PREVENTION & CONSEQUENCES

Now to our discussion for this weekend! We will be discussing "FEMICIDE: PREVENTION & CONSEQUENCES”.
Reports of women losing their lives at the hands of intimate partners or people they know closely has continued to make headlines across different parts of the world. Currently in Nigeria, the DOHS foundation has accounted for 40 victims of femicide in 2026 alone.
Beyond the shock and grief these cases bring, they also raise difficult questions about the cold heart of these perpetrators, and whether justice systems are doing enough to deter such crimes.

Here's the question!

Have you ever witnessed or heard about a close case of any woman who was killed by her intimate partner or male family member? How did you navigate such news and what higher consequences or systems do you believe our governments and communities need to put in place to protect women from this femicide problem, as well as give justice to the dead?

OR

Do you think society has become too reactive instead of preventive when it comes to addressing the news of femicide?
What signs should women be aware of to enable them identify potential perpetrators and what action should each individual in th society take in preventing some of these tragedies before they happen?

If you have a topic you would like us to discuss in our future hangouts, please feel free to suggest it to us in the comment section and tag @sam.hangout to it.

Okay Let's Gist!!!

Be as simple and sincere with the discussion, hehehe.

Greetings house, it's another week for an interesting topic. We go again.

I have not personally witnessed a case of femicide, but I have heard many heartbreaking stories on the news and social media. Each time I hear about a woman being killed by someone she loved or trusted, I feel sad and wonder how such a tragedy could have been prevented.

I believe society is often more reactive than preventive. We usually pay attention after a woman has lost her life instead of acting when the first signs of abuse appear. Many victims experience threats, violence, or controlling behaviour long before things become deadly.

The government should take reports of domestic violence seriously and ensure offenders are punished according to the law. Communities should also provide safe shelters, counselling, and support for women in abusive relationships.
Women should watch out for warning signs such as excessive jealousy, controlling behaviour, constant threats, physical abuse, or a partner who refuses to accept a breakup. These are not signs of love but signs of danger.

Everyone has a role to play. Family, friends, neighbours, and religious leaders should speak up when they notice abuse and encourage victims to seek help early. Working together can help prevent more women from losing their lives.

@zusi78 @marsdave @sarahbaby @nsigo1 to take the mic 🎤 and contribute the topic.

I completely agree with you, domestic violence should never be ignored, and offenders must be held accountable. At the same time, women need to recognize the warning signs early and seek help before the situation becomes more dangerous.

Actually , i think last year, i heard a case were a boyfriend murdered the girlfriend and he was arrested. And sentence this year.

Women should be more careful especially in relationships. Again, if you don't really love somebody mind the way you collect gift from him.

It's important for everyone to be honest about their intentions and avoid giving false hope. At the same time, accepting a gift should never be seen as a justification for threats, abuse, or violence in a relationship.

happy weekend everyone ..hope we are alive and thriving...

The topic of discussion this week is sensitive and also a popular happening around us over the years.

No need dwelling more on this talk because one thing is certain ! life has no spare"👌. it's high time we should be intentionally jealous of our lives without reservations. no one will just wake up one day and lose his or her life in the hands of a perpetrator. the signs must be there for sometime before a tragedy! . so personally , I wouldn't wait for the society to react or prevent it , I will protect my life by reporting the issue to the appropriate authority at the early stage and quietly take myself to a safe place, simple, before waiting for the government to do the needful which might take forever .

Happy weekend everyone

Its indeed really sad how people who say they love each other, turn out to becomes the devil to their partner, truth is I really don't blame the other psrty inflicting the pain , it is the receiver of the pain I blame, because imagine you know this person is toxic and you still go ahead to stay with them, because in your mind "what will people say if you leave the marriage" look at the case of that 18 year old girl, her eyes were swollen, she still allowed the guy to be calling her his wife, so when he was doing all that to her, he didn't know she was his wife? Can you imagine the way he was hugging her and she still allowed him to....

Its really a sad thing, me I will always protect my life because I only have one life , and no matter how life is , like life is hard and all, but still I prefer to be a living being than a corpse because how will I fulfill my destiny in life if I allow myself to become a punching bag?

God should help us and many women out there should put themselves first in all they do, no long talk

My dear sister, I totally agree with you. We only have one life, and we should protect it with everything in us. No one deserves to become a punching bag or be in a relationship or situation where their safety is constantly at risk. No matter how difficult life may be, there's this saying that "he who runs from a fight leaves to fight another day." So being alive and taking steps to protect yourself gives you the opportunity to keep living.

Hello everyone 🤠
How y'all doing 😌...
Happy weekend 🎊

To not beat around the bush...

I.

About if I've heard, yes I have, and I haven't just heard, I've also witnessed a case when I was still very young. There was this woman living very close to us back then, she constantly gets beaten by her husband, everyone knew about it but no one dared to interfere, the last person who dared to interfere in it was taken to the barrack and taught a lesson, so everyone kept their distance from the families matter. Long story short, she later died. Some said she committed suicide since she couldn't take it any longer, some said it was sher husband that killed her, the most saddening part was how fast the matter was swept off. My mum still talks about it until now, cos in all honesty justice was never served maybe because the husband is a top military officer... Maybe.
I've been hearing about the news of a young lady on the internet as well, but I haven't really gotten the full story, but based on the little I've come across, it was like the husband was maltreating her, it seems this particular case has gone viral online... But then why do these things keep happening, is it that there's no law or this people are above the law.

I feel the government should come up with a much more stricter law to punish offenders, they shouldn't just come up with it,but also enforce it. Also, families, communities and the society should stop treating abuse, domestic violence, maltreatment and such as a private family matter. We should allow this victims to speak up, to seek for help, and to be helped. The more we treat things like this as private family matters and try to bury it, the more it will continue and another woman's name, dream, and justice get buried.

II.

Personally, I believe the society has become more reactive than preventive. I was watching a movie recently, the wife was getting maltreated by the husband and when the mother got to know, she looked at her daughter and said, "there's no sign you're suffering." Because she couldn't find an injury on her, she saw she's feeding well and the husband is providing for her. To her, she can't leave, she even told her she can't come home for anything, she better stay in her husband's house the way she's in hers.... And I feel that's how it is in most places. No one will take a step not until a woman is injured, battered or killed. And by then, it is way too late, the deed has been doje already.

And when we talk of signs that we often overlook, we talk the likes of extreme jealousy, constant insults, threats, physical violence, isolation from either families or friends, controlling behaviors and many more are the warning signs that shows but we overlook.

Most women as well see this signs as love, it's because he loves me too much. He loves you too much and he's isolated you from your family, he loves you too much and he's beating you... Common. Seek for help, you matter as well. You're human. You don't deserve such. In as much as I don't preach divorce, it is necessary in some situations.

So, women, please seek for help, don't start praying and hoping things will change when you're not taking any step.

Also the society, the families, friends, mentors, religious leaders and all as well have a role to play. Support those who want to leave a dangerous relationship, don't start calming then down, things will get worse. Also, the home should teach the male child that love is never expressed through fear, control, violence, extreme jealousy and isolation.

Thank you for your attention to this matter 🫡

Let's take social media for example. Before something tragic goes viral. There are signs that have been ignored or overlooked before it happend. The public attention increases after the damage has been done.

Some content creators will even see it as an opportunity to gain more followers or engagement.

So yes the society are often reacting than protective.
Whether family or society, everyone has a role to play.

Family, friends or loved ones are expected to listen and make the home feel safe when someone complains that they feel unsafe. They are expected to show concern and support.

The society are suppose to speak up and go against any form of action that normalise abuse.
Our schools and religion institutions are not left out. They should not focus on lecturing alone they should also teach morals, respect, good conducts and healthy relationship.
The government should ensure to create effective law.
Collective effort is required to help bring femicide to an end.

Yes oo. Prayer is important, but it should go hand in hand with action. Bible even say faith with out work is dead. Also prayer without work is useless. If someone feels unsafe or is experiencing abuse, asking for help from trusted family members, trusted friends, or even the authorities would be a necessary thing to do. No one should have to suffer in silence while hoping things will change on their own.

Clock ittttt mi bro 🙂‍↔️.... I trained you wella. Kudos to me fess 😌😏

Honestly ehh, your story about the woman living close to your house just reminded me of Osinachi, the gospel singer who was severely maltreated by her husband before she eventually lost her life. The pain of her loss shook a lot of people to the bone marrow but I very much doubt that justice was sought for her.

It's quite painful how these things happen but in most cases, the people who could have salvaged the situation would sit still and do nothing.
I remember watching a movie as such and when the women reached out to her mother to help speak to her husband, the only words the mum offered was that no marriage is perfect 😞.

The government really should put laws in place to atleast reduce the rate these acts occur, if not eradicate it.
And males? The discipline should be instilled at the earliest stages of their lives. A good number of them tend to wear the conviction about men being superior to women like a second skin 😳😑.

This question made me remember a story that I read on X on how a female was buried and reading through it, the shocking part was not even what the husband did..it was how some people who knew this lady privately knew about the whole situation according to the poster, and nothing was said about it because her parents believed that she should endure it, "na her husband" some believed that it was a family affair and they will find a solution to it. Our society today isn't reactive anyone and that is one of the reasons why a lot of happening today. We have chosen to be selectively blind all in the name of "e no concern me, no be my family" a lot of th we things are obviously clear to us what what some will say is that they don't want to overstep. We as a society need to step up because accountability matters enormously and not harsher sentencing. Because when we all stop treating a woman's fear as a private inconvenience and start treating it as a public emergency, because everyy femicide I have read about, and I even read one few days ago about a lady who went to visit his boyfriend and was stabbed to death has been preceded by several periods where a lot of people saw something that was disturbing but refused to speak up and continue their lives instead. When we see something that is not right, unusual, we should always speak up and when a lady says she is afraid, I believe that we should believe her words instantly and not at her funeral. Here's my humble 2cent.

This is more than two cent already my bro.
And you're definitely on point.

We all have a role to play in this, and we the make genders need to be taught how to love right. A lot of us see control, isolation and the likes as a way of expressing our love. And the ladies too, they shouldn't her blinded. Speak up when necessary, seek for help and if it's a divorce, my dear go for it.

We all have a role to play for real, but it's funny how most victims don't listen or run away when they see signs and even get warnings from those around and willing to help.
I use to have a lodge mate in school that was willing to do anything for a boyfriend that beats her, we all tried to warn her but she was too stubborn and attached to a man that abused her always.

I just hope more ladies learn to leave and also stay safe out there, crazy things are happening...

What you just said here....I think there is something behind that in a way that some ladies enjoy to stay in a relationship like that than to opt out for a peaceful one. Because, tell me, how will you allow someone to be abusing you and you will still stay. I can't just wrap my head around it....

There's no victim who enjoys their abuse. If we still speak like this and insist they must share a blame in an abuse they're already experiencing, how do we intend to curb the problem?

Again, it is not enjoyment. It's mostly a result of low self-esteem, ignorance, fear and poverty.

Nobody is blaming the victim....understanding what keeps them there is exactly the conversation that leads to solutions. Me calling it out isn't insensitivity, it's honesty if I may say and that is exactly what I said up there, if you read my initial response, you'd understand better

I agree with your point my brother. On many occasions, alarms and concerns are being ignored until it's too late. When someone says they feel afraid, we should not ignore their words. Speaking up when we notice something unusual and supporting those who ask for help can make a real difference.

Those in love rarely listens, it's possible people talk to this victims and they ignore. In cases like this, a fatal punishment would bring caution to many, and if certain norms on the female gender can be address, we'll have more gentlemen who doesn't become dictators and manipulators

It's quite sad that people are being encouraged to voice out their fears and challenges but yet , in situations like this when someone eventually does, nothing is done about it. And when death comes knocking, you'll hear some people uttering words like, "she told me ooo" 😒.

All hands sure have to be on deck, not just the relatives or closest friends of the female involved. The media itself could press for justice in such cases rather than simply making skits out of it.

This is a matter of concern in our current society. Are women really safe in this society?

The rate at which I see news about femicide is just too much. The one that drives me crazy is that, most times, it's coming from a partner, like someone you once told, "I love you" . These are people you might have known for years and learnt to trust, it's becoming scary.

It's so sad that the society only talks about this after it occurs. There will be so much heat on the matter, and then it's swept under the carpet again, until another one occurs.

I feel looking for preventive measures is more important, because women are endangered.

The protest for justice and public outrage are also important. Most times we are being heard, but it's becoming normal for this public outrage and cry for justice to die after weeks and everyone moves on, without creating awareness on ways to avoid femicide from occurring. Early prevention and intervention is very necessary for every lady out there.

Women should be very mindful of warning signs, especially during the early stages of a friendship, relationship and even marriage.

Behaviors, such as controlling and obsessed behavior, when a partner is trying to isolate them from family and friends, verbal abuse and threats, stalking patterns, repeated disrespect to their personal boundaries, and more especially, physical violence. These aren't signs of love, but rather threats to us.

We can all prevent femicide collectively too, by reporting abuse cases as friends, families and even the community at large. We shouldn't mind our business in cases that involve abuse. There should be no excuse for this behavior. We should love our female kids right and show good examples, so they can identify a threat disguised as love when they see one.

Identifying warning signs early is very important, not just identifying them but also running from them with so much energy. We should love ourselves so much as women to know when to use the exit door.

@marsdave @chefqueen @afrikens @cohlson @goldenproject it's hangout time 🥳

We can't talk about the after effect without discussing the root cause. No doubt that a lot of people are in a abusive relationship but what I do know is that before the settled for such relationship, they must have seen the signs but decided to ignore. And most people women are not helping. Not helping in a way that after advising them to leave, they might turn the whole situation on your that you want to scatter their relationship and this is why most people are silent on matters like this. There are a lot of factors anyway.but we must not keep quiet as long as we know that something is not right.

You're right my sister. We really need to pay more attention on prevention, awareness, and consistent action instead of only reacting after the damage has already been done.

Yes, I think society has become too reactive instead of preventive when it comes to femicide. We often only pay attention after a woman has been killed. We share the news, cry online, demand justice, and protest. But by then, it’s already too late. We need to focus more on stopping these tragedies before they happen.
Women should watch out for warning signs because they just don't wake up to such actions one morning, no they often show warning signs early. So women should be aware and look out for,
Extreme jealousy and controlling attitude. They will be trying to isolate you from friends, family, or checking your phone constantly. An Uber guy that carried me the other day was telling me how a guy was constantly calling his girlfriend on phone immediately after he came to pick the girl. He was afraid that the Uber guy was too clean and handsome, so he wants to finish the girl with call. They Uber guy said, at some point that the girl stopped picking his call, he started calling him, Heheh. I told him that the girl, should run for her life because it's a warning sign.

Exploading over small things, breaking items or distroyting properties all in the name of anger or provocation, or threatening you when he's angry.

Not taking “no” for an answer or even taking it seriously, forcing you to do things you’re uncomfortable with.

They constantly blame and manipulate you. Making you feel like everything is your fault, or saying “If you leave me, I’ll die or kill myself.”

If he has history of violence in his passed relationships. If he has hurt past partners, the way he treats animals, or threatens others, take it seriously. It's not a joke.

Society and individuals can all help to prevent it by speaking up early and not keeping abuse as a secret because of “shame” or “what people will say.” because "what people will say" has actually lead many to their early grave" last last people will still say what they want to say. But then you will be 10fit below. Tell a trusted friend, family member, or authority.

Posting cases of femicide on social media recently, has really helped a lot. It puts pressure on police to act fast, and it helps them trace the culprit. When people report quickly, justice comes faster.

Ladies should always practice safety habits by telling someone where they are going, who they are meeting, and checking regularly. Share your live location when needed.

We must educate men and boys, ladies and girls. We must teach them that anger is not an excuse for violence, and that “no” means no.

We must support victims, not silenced them or silence ourselves. If you see a friend in a dangerous relationship, don’t judge her. Encourage her to leave and help her find support. If we stop waiting for tragedy to happen before we start shouting for justice after a life has been lost, if we all start acting fast, and early by speaking up, reporting, and protecting each other we can all stop femicide.

Rightly spoken. Everyone has a role to play in this-the individual, society, parents and community as a whole.. Observing those signs are definitely one of them, one who is abusive or manipulative are likely people who can go the extreme.

Hello everyone, panel of judges accurate... 😂😂 Okay enough of that.
Happy weekend my people.

Hmmm this topic sent goosebumps all over my body you know why? I don't know about other countries but let's talk about my country "Nigeria."

When a husband abused his wife in Nigeria, out of 100%, 90% of our naija parents will advice you to stay in that marriage and not just our parents. When you go further to seek the society (internet) for advice, a lot of people will advice you to remain there some might even call you dramatic or blame you.

But I will start from our parents especially our mothers. Why? Why do I have to stay in an abusive marriage because you don't want people to talk?
Especially parents with titles, (pastors, imam, etc) mostly greedy parents because the marriage is a source of income to them.

So yes I've heard and also I've seen a lot of situations like this not just intimate partner and also male family member. It's so sad because each stories passes a sign or warning out there that were ignored.

Ignorance has made society believe that when someone is going through abuse it's none of our business because they are not family or related to us.

The government and the society should not just create a strong law but also enforced it against domestic violence.
community also need to play a crucial role to put all this to an end. The society needs to speak up and stop blaming the victims and support them.

Appropriate punishment and fair investigations should be carried out on the offenders to serve as justice to those who lost their lives.

Unfortunately society speak up when it's too late.. if only individuals can notice the early signs and run for their lives, there would be a high rate of decline in femicide

Do you think society has become too reactive instead of preventive when it comes to addressing the news of femicide? What signs should women be aware of to enable them identify potential perpetrators and what action should each individual in th society take in preventing some of these tragedies before they happen?

Answer

Historically, society are known to be reactive , a sudden uproar after the news of a femicide. Most often the root problem is not addressed. This pattern keeps repeating and society reacts the same way. To combat this, society must address certain norms and belief on the female gender. Female should also notice red flags when dealing with partners and family members. Such red flags can be;

  1. Dominance
  2. Jealousy
  3. Gaslighting and harmful comments
  4. History of abuse etc.

And for perpetrators, laws should be made that punish offenders with fatal judgement.

On the other hand, society and the community should address laws that favour a single gender while sidelining the other, the female gender should also be an important pillar in the society, Orientation should be given on signs to notice and the kind of relationship to avoid.

I don't know about other cities but I think our society is only loud after femicide, to be honest.

When a news about femicide hits social media, people start talking, shouting, doing all kinds of things. Some media influencers will create contents with the news just to cash in.

But when it starts, no one talks or even try to prevent it. If she complains, the least they can do is tell her that no marriage is perfect, so endure. It's for better or worse. You'll hear things like "just stay because of your children", "pray for him", "respect him and all what-nots." Like seriously?

And to think that most of these advices are from family members and friends. Gosh!

How can a right thinking person advise someone to stay in an abusive relationship?

How about the church? Some will tell you that divorce is a sin! Really?

Honestly, family, churches and the society at large are the ones fanning this flame of femicide. They're the ones encouraging these "koromoto" men in the act. Because tell me how a parent will see their daughter abused and still encourage her to stay? That's giving the man the right to do whatever with her.

Ladies, you're responsible for your lives, so protect it with everything in you. If you're in danger, please reach out, speak out. Report. Life no get duplicate. Don't listen to what the society will say because they'll still talk and blame you if you kpai there. So leave to to live.

This is for all of us: if you know someone who's in danger, speak, speak out, report to authorities. Don’t wait till the worst happens before you come online to cry.

Happy weekend, everyone!
Honestly, to answer the second question, I'll say that society has always been more reactive to sensitive situations like this. While others grive the incident, many take it as the best time to give moral lessons to women instead of focusing only on seeking justice for the victim and also asking the important questions on why men kill women. In less than a week, the conversation dies off. Rinse and repeat.

The problem also lies in us simply calling it murder and watering it down like every other killing. But No! It is FEMICIDE and women are being killed on the basis of their gender and the perceived roles that comes with being female. That's why you read a news of a woman being killed for not preparing dinner for her husband, a brother choking his sister for not obeying his decisions, and a lady being beheaded for no longer wanting a relationship with her ex-lover.

I only want people to know that there is nothing a woman can do to stay protected because the perpetrators are everywhere, even in our homes. Instead of always Victim blaming, we can shift the conversation to why these men kill women, who raised them to be this heartless, where was this behaviour learned and what systems enable them to keep perpetuating this kind of harm in large numbers despite the laws. Most importantly, these killers should never be rehabilitated back into the society.

Happy Sunday guys 💟

Yeaahh I went to church and we still continued on our topic of being reminded to rely on God alone. Every other solution is solutionless as long as it's not involving God

A question was asked though so maybe y'all can answer too. If you were the headmaster who was told not to mention the name of Jesus or he will be beheaded, will you shut up or call Jesus and be beheaded?

It's no news that people don't care especially our government unless the issue is affecting them to but as long as they are and their families are safe, they pay no or less attention. Just look at the bandits issue as example, femicide is not new,it has been happening way back ,it has always and we be always get less attention because the work is full of cruel people,it is only when life is already lost, you see them posting all around and say they are fighting, that's a fight that will never wake up the dead. My advice has always been and will always be love yourself above anyone, that way you won't be too blind by love for another person to ignore danger to your life and also be contented with what you earn, what you can get yourself, love of money blinds most women from running from violence partners that leads to their death most times ,once you see signs, don't wait for wonders. As a woman don't ever wait on "He will change" ,his parents can't change him till he gets to that point and you think you are the second Almighty God that can do it? I pity you.

Run as far as your leg can take you ,no one is coming to your aid or maybe they come after you've gone ,so they might at least give you a befitting burial. Live, life has no duplicate.

Now to the government, I hope one day the government will change this their ways and take citizens life more seriously,I wish they react and take proper actions to claims and reports as fast as possible because some people stay mute just because they believe the law won't favour them and might even turn against them. It is well.

Happy Sunday guys 🎉🥰
