Being Hopeful Of Good Things To Come

There is a reason why people go through the hustles and tussles of life - because of the hopes of good things to come. When you go through a tunnel for example, why you do not stop midway down the tunnel is because of the hopes of finding light at the end of it. Without the hopes of something better coming, life will be boring. It is the hopes that keeps one going even when other things seem to be going in an "anyhow" manner. I once told a friend this; "When you know your destination, you will not be swayed by the undulating nature of the terrain." Hope is the ability to see the glorious future from the present moment.

It is worthy to note that being hopeful does not mean that one will not face challenges. Obviously, challenges will arise and opposition will greet you, but one thing is sure; if you refuse to give up, then you are sure to arrive at your destination. Take this instance: if you are travelling to a destination for an important assignment or to fulfil a demand and along the road, you meet traffic on your way, what will you do? The truth is that you will not abandon the journey and return back to your home, you will definitely continue on that journey without a recourse to the traffic. The reason is that where you are going to is more important than the traffic. And you are hopeful of arriving there.

When I was very much younger, during my senior primary school time. I came home one day and was feeling very hungry. Even on my way from the school, my stomach was already reporting to me that I was famished because we stayed longer than necessary in school due to some factors. But while going home, I had the hope that I will eat once I get home, and that kept me going. When I got home, I was told to remove my school uniform and go to the warmer to take my food, it felt so adorable. Of course, I had the hopes of eating, so I was already looking forward to that. This reminded me of the statement that is normally made by the Igbos of the Southeastern part of Nigeria:

Aguu nwere nchekwube adighi egbu egbu.

This means that a hunger that has hopes of eating will not kill you.

Without hopes, life will not only be boring but unattractive. Do you remember when you were much younger, how you wanted to study a particular course? Of course, this is part of the reasons a lot of people go through school, attend classes, sit for exams, scale new classes, and keep going; just to be able to actualize their hopes of being in a particular career. Hope takes effect in all areas of life. In football for example; it is the hopes of winning the trophy that makes each team to devote time and energy to train and then go through each part of the tournament. Imagine in a competition and you are told that there is absolutely nothing to win, not even a "thank you," you will not put in zeal into it.

One of the things to also know about hope is that it is primarily based on life. That is; once you still have life, then hope is still available to you. This is because it is never over as long as life is sustained. When there is life, then everything can and will eventually fall into place. With time, many things will naturally get solved.

If you will take your mind back in time to some years back, you will realise that some of the things you have now were once your earnest needs. Take this instance: a lot of people wished to own phone during the early times of mobile phone. But now, phone is no longer your problem. Not just that, the phone you would have gotten then might not even be worthy in this era, because of the advancements in mobile communication technology. This is why I believe that time can also solve some challenges.

Another thing to know is that; if you have hope only in the now, then your hope is very bleak. Your hope should not be built on what is happening at the moment but on what you know will happen in the future. When a farmer plants his seeds, it will be practically impossible to harvest it the same day of planting but after a while. The farmer will keep tendering the plant because he knows that he will harvest something good from it. So all his actions will be based on the hopes of harvest. In the same way in life, the sacrifices you make today, the actions you take today, the prices you pay now, are all part of your expressions of hope and they will set you on the path of achieving great things. If you will not give up on hope, then your dreams will ultimately become a reality.

What you say is true and is the driving force in each of our lives, I would change the word hope to want. Hope seems too much tied to fate; when we do something, anything is tied to the desire to do it to achieve something better in the future!
